The AV2, as a DAC or stereo pre-amp?

You will get an idea on the AV2 vs. 112 comparison by going through some of the previous Forum posts.

As a starting point, typing AV2 into search produces about 3 pages of posts right now. Both Naim Admin & members report that the AV2 is not quite as good as the 112. However, they also make it clear that the AV2 is considered really quite good for stereo.

I'll let more experienced Forum members respond to your first question on the performance of the DAC of a generic CD/DVD player. But it probably would not be reasonable to expect CD5 or CDX performance levels. FWIW, some members have started to experiment with cheaper SACD and DVD players with some interesting results.

I think you've got where I was coming from.

If the internal DAC got anywhere near the performance of say a CD5 when partnered with say a DVD player, really would be a cheap way to get good sound.

I'd be keen to hear the AV2 as a red-book CD decoder too.

I realise that jitter has been raised as an issue with external DACs in the past but since everyone is raving about the quality of DTS/AC3/Dolby Digital decoder in the AV2 the jitter problem may have been solved.

Or is everyone raving because we are comparing consumer quality with audiophile sound?

An AV2 would be much more affordable if I could trade in my CDX.

Could any say how the AV2 would compare to a CD5 when used as a DAC on the back of a DVD player?

For that matter, could anyone say (from experience) how good the AV2 is an analogue pre-amp when compared to a 112?
