CDS2 problem...
Posted by: Somesuch on 11 September 2003
Anyone have this problem before?
Upon closing the lid or pressing 'play', the disc won't spin and the display shows 'Err'.
Disc is not slipping, and I don't believe the puck is bad (I tried a new one).
The disc will sometimes give a fitful jerk or two, but won't spin up.
This has been happening intermittently for a while, but now occurs consistently (maybe 7/8 tries) with any CD.
My studly dealer has already sent it off to Naim for a look-see, but I was wondering if anyone else might be familiar with this failure mode.
Thx,
E.

Mine was on that road a few weeks ago. It didn't get as far as yours before I had the transport/laser replaced. It seems that this is happening to a CDS2 every week or so now, so they must have a definite shelf-life.

I had the same problem which was resolved with a new transport. It was a warranty job so I don't know the costs involed.

This is rather worrying!
What is the estimated lifetime before this (these) fault occurs? And what is the Naim warranty period?
My CDS2 is coming up 2 years old and purchased new.
Can Richard Dane, or others in the know, comment on whether there is an inherent or batch problem with CDS2 components.
Cheers

Peter,
there have been no mechanism batch problems that we're aware of with the CDS2. The machanism is the same Philips VAM1205 that we have used in other players for 6 years now.
Of course, mechs by their nature are wearing parts and will eventually require replacement. The mechs are basically not serviceable (at least not cost-effectively on an individual basis) so even if a small component inside is the only thing to have a problem then replacement is required. Philips CD mechs are generally very reliable compared to some other types but if the mech should unfortunately fail during the warranty period then we will of course replace it free of charge.
Of more importance is the fact that when the mechanism does eventually fail we can replace it. Believe it or not this isn't always the case with other makes. Our policy of holding large stocks of replacement mechs and programs of mech refurbishment for those mechansims that have been long unavailable will ensure that anybody with a Naim player can use it with confidence for many years hence.

I'll get hung for saying this, but what about paying a reduced fee (compared to what is usually charged for such things) for an extended warranty?
Posted on: 12 September 2003 by Peter Gear
Thanks Richard for some reassurance.
What is the warranty period? I really don't know this and have never asked - always assumed Naim kit never failed!
Cheers

Peter,
the Naim factory Warranty is currently 2 years. Depending upon the country of sale some dealers or distributors may extend that warranty further.

PR - Meridian Transports
You're not quite correct. There were two versions of the 200 Transport. The earlier one cannot be repaired now (and is not a direct swap for a later one as the electronics are not compatible), but the later one (Philips CDM4/19 mechanism) serial numbers starting with a 2****** or in the case of the 206 4*****, can be replaced. The unit I have was refitted with a new Laser Assembly back in May/June this year.
Hope that helps

Well, in all fairness, my CDS2 is of indeterminate age; it was a retrofitted CDS.
I just spoke to NaimUSA and Chris West was very helpful, and indulged me in speculating on probable causes and likely costs.

Regular decent cd players last for a long time and I don't see why an exception should be made for Naim.
By good fortune they do last a long time, but if they do fail after, say, 5 years you usually have to bin them. This isn't the case with Naim CD players.
I do agree that the warranty should be more than two years though. 5 years would be about right, imho.
Regards,
Steve.

Not all is doom and gloom
- if you do need to get the mechanism replaced the CDSii will come back from the service sounding so good (as all the bits and suspension things will be checked and adjusted) that you will think that you have been upgraded to a CDSiii.
A by product is that during the enforced absence of the CDSii you will probably attempt to use the DVD player to play CDs and then you will appreciate the capability of the CDSii even more
It also is a selling plus when you come to trade it in, especially if you have had the new PIC installed while the mechanism was being changed.

Wot, on their CD players ?
Posted on: 15 September 2003 by Rasher
Come on chaps - Transports for CD palyers are bought in by all manufacturers from Philips or Sony, so this is not a Naim only issue, its the case with every CD player. We do have the benefit of having ours repaired though. I would be interested to know what the cost is, as the discussions about CDX2 or used CDS2 could be influenced by this.
What sort of message is that going to send out to the potential customer!! "We have a reliability problem, so here are the bits to fix it when it goes". I don't think that will go down too well.

I ownbed a top hat CDI for 8 years and came to the conclusion that it is best only worry about transport problems if you have them. However, I do like the idea of being able to purchase an extended warranty for all kit.

I am considering a used CDS2 and this thread makes me lean toward a CDX2. What are the cost of the repaired mentioned?
