So you've only just received that 'funny' Stingray email that's doing the rounds about this news. If i receive it one more time, i'm gonna scream!

Sad news though. Frown

Sorry to see him go, he was one-of-a-kind.
Went out doing what he loved. Beats the hell out of a heart attack in an office cubicle.
On the other hand he left his lovely wife and 2 little kids behind. That's a shame.

A great loss.

Seems to have generated more public outcry than Cobain/ Monroe/ Dean/ Di put together, and rightfully so.

What a loss.
and to be taken out by a sting ray!?

It was really very unfortunate but ... it was written in the books I suppose.
Very sad too as he leaves two very young childran behind.

Hope the Ozzie gov't will do the family right & look after them. Steve had a big part in putting Oz on the map

For some reason his loss feels a sadder event for me than I would have expected. Perhaps it seems all the more surprising because the man obviously had such a love of life.

yeah, he had an enthusiasm that was unparalleled, I'd haev thought it would have been a snake or something. they siad Sting rays are normally docile. Glad I stayed clear of them when I was scuba dinving many years ago. They gave me the willies, so I stopped diving.

I think Oz has been on the map for a while but Steve epitomised a certain element of the Aussie character, the larrikin.

A state funeral has been offered to the family. There is talk of it being a state memorial service.
I had to discuss the death with my kids, they are huge fans since Steve was the star of the Wiggly Safari DVD by The Wiggles.
He will be remembered by many for his love of life, his family and of course those mad crocs and all of the other crazy animals.

Who'd have thought a stingray would have got him?

I've been trying to work out why this has affected so many people.

I think he had a certain childlike innocence, embodied in his wide eyed amazement at the wonders of the animal world, incomprehension at how people could possibly harm animals, and boundless enthusiasm for what he did.

He seemed absent of any cynicism, despite having witness some pretty questionably practices (whaling etc)...

A remarkable, if slightly eccentric man.

I've enjoyed his program on Animal Planet, but was a little disturbed by the chances he took and he seemed to put himself unnecessarily in harms way. I don't think any amount of ratings would or should be worth it, but as Niel Young says better to burn out than to fade away. For most of us, I think it's better to leave the animals alone...Big Brother
