AV By Pass 122x/150x

Posted by: Charles Chan on 18 April 2008

Hi guys,

I have ordered a Din>RCA connect to use with my 122x pre-amp and Marantz av amp for AV By Pass.

Am I right to connect it with the AV input on my pre-amp from the pre-out front of AV AMP?

What matters should I play attention such as volume control etc.

Many thanks

PDF of Amp manual

In your manual (see link above) section 25.2 - AV Integration (Unity Gain) describes how to set your amp for this.

You should make sure the RCA-Din lead you've ordered is the right way round - you'll need 2RCA Phono TO Din..... a Din to phono is designed to send the signal from the DIN output of a CD player to a non-Naim amp... you want the reverse of that.

Yes, you can then connect your front stereo pair of preouts to input 4 on the back of the 122x.

Once done then on AV input you only use the volume control on your Marantz, and on all other inputs you use the volume control on your 122x.

I have an n-Vi connected to a 112x/150x in the same basic fashion

If your Marantz has an auto-setup with a microphone then just hook it all up, perform the steps to enable the Unity gain function, and run the auto-setup routine for the Marantz. Voila!

It occurs to me it would be really nice (but no doubt detrimental to the sound of the system in some way), if the AV input could be triggered automatically from the AV receiver somehow. i.e. if by having a 12v trigger, when you switch on or start playing something via the AV receiver, the Naim preamp would automatically switch to AV input. That would be really handy.

Does this not happen with automatic switching - if you have an AV2.

I must try it.

Charles....

With an n-Vi in my system, and auto input switching enabled on the pre for AV & CD inputs, my 112x (and your 122x) would switch to the AV input whenever it saw an AV specific RC5 remote signal.. such as AV Volume up/down, DVD play/stop commands.

It also switches back to CD input whenever it sees a CD (RC5) code, like play, pause, skip.

With a non-naim AV processor this won't help much, but you could at least configure the latter option so that the cd input is selected the moment you hit PLAY for a Naim/Arcam/Cyrus cd player......
