nSub "User poll": Gain and cut-off freq.
Posted by: Anders on 27 March 2006

Hi,
Calling on users of nSub in HiFi set-up!
What parameters do you use? Specifically the cut-off frequency and the gain.
Could you also specify what speakers you use and how you position your nSub in the room (i.e. between speakers, along sidewalls etc)
Regards
Anders

I have used an n-Sub successfully with a full n-Vi/n-Sats/n-Cent system setting it at 60hz with gain of 40. The sub was/is in the middle of the longer side wall, placed about 6 inches from the wall of a 15'x13' room with the sofa 3 feet from the rear wall. The result is very believable and very well integrated.

The sub settings are of course determined by the frequency response of the main stereo speakers so in the scheme of things that is the first question.
I don't have an n-sub but use a REL with remote control which allows similar setup flexibility.
My main speakers are TOTEM mani 2's which have a rated bass performance limit of 28Hz -6dB, which is defenitely acheived in my room. After some experimentation I have found I get good integration with the REL set at 30Hz. The sub is positioned midway along the wall behind the speakers about 6 inches out. The REL is a sealed box design with a downward firing speaker.
Since listening volume determines the bass output of the main speakers (at low volume the bass frequencies will be not be produced as strongly as at more realistic levels) the sub gets adjusted on an offered gain scale ranging from 0-100, at a gain setting of between 50 -60 dependent on listening volume.

I use an n-Sub with my ART silver signature Emotions in a 552/500 set up. The Emotions are perfectly adequate in the bass but I added the n-Sub to increase feeling to the very lowest of notes.
In my room, the setting is crossover at 45Hz and gain of 78. I have the n-Sub positioned approximately equal distance between the left speaker and the laft wall. The n-Sub faces the front wall.
Kind regards,
Joe

Between speakers, cut to 35 hz, level 70, not reversed.
