Overly shiny logo's on Series 5...
Posted by: Surfing Alien on 02 June 2003
Hi Folks,
I own a cd5/nac112/nap150/fc2 setup; sounds great, but the overly shiny Naim logo's in the middle annoy me quite a bit, especially since I like to sit in the dark while listening music.
Is there anyone who founf this to be a problem too & found an easy way to "fix" this?
A friend of mine suggested, more or less making fun, I should operate on the hardware and replace the green LED's (I guess Naim uses LEDS?) with blue ones. This is probably like cursing inside a church, but it sure would give things a different look :-)
Regards,
Peter

im honestly thinking that blue might be more soothing, but likely brighter perceptually

Can Naim Audio have a solution to this? I do notice that the new logo is somewhat brighter than the classic logo. I would think it should be a simple fix if naim tell the technician what to change (may be just a matter of replacing a resistor?)

When we introduced the new Reference range we reduced the brightness of the logo ever so slightly. This change was also implemented in the 5 series range.
If you have older 5 series kit and you would like a slightly less bright logo then contact your dealer and he can supply and fit some of the new logos to your equipment.
Then again, why not spend the money on more music....?

Can't you use that stuff they dab on the heads of bald male newscastes to stop the viewers being dazzled?

Venetian blinds on alight tilt allow you to see out and plenty of daylight in but make it difficult to see in clearly.

It will be very classy if the Naim logo is machined on the metal plate and NO light, no cheap plastic. take a look at Wadia logo and see as a good example.

Thanks for that contribution Tuan. I'm sure Naim will decide to spend money on expensive tooling costs and subsequently raise the price of all their equipment with no increase in sound quality to please people who obviously put more onus on the appearance of the equpiment than the sound quality. SOUND QUALITY AND RELIABILITY SHOULD BE ALL.
Sorry, Rant over.

A few words from Julian (Hifi Review, April 1989):

Ahem, so why have a bulb at all? What does it contribute to
sound quality? It is merely sucking power out of your XXXcap power supply...
It contributes nothing and probably diminishes a very small amount, but it is a legal requirement, I have been lead to beleive, that all electrical equipment has to have an indication that it's powered on, even in standbye mode. My Micromega stage 5 CDP has switched brightness at 3 levels, normal, less bright and off but in the manual it states that the company had to leave a small red segement on to comply with European law. Personally I wouldn't care if all the components had displays, lights etc that can be switched off except when you want it. Perhaps Naim can comment on the legal ramifications and clear up any confusion. I don't know what the laws are in other countries.

BS60065 requires that any electrical component with a power consumption more than 15W must indicate that it is "On" when powered up.
It doesn't have to be illuminated but it must be clearly indicated.

My tuppence worth
1. Indeed without any LED indicators, most houses in the UK will have stealable gear, however people do judge on appearance, as marketeers have proven in supermarkets with "shelf-barker" devices (wee bits of card with coloured text like "TRY ME FREE", etc.
2. Hiding logos and LEDs must be simple enough, but ensuring equipment is not damaged is key! Surely Naim can print off and die-cut some sexy logos in a selection of colours (including purple?!) on stiff card for such security-worried owners.
3. My elec tin-opener [shortly-going-to-charity-shop-'cos-it's-crap-and-was-an-unwanted-engagement-present] doesn't have an LED. It is not desirable for thieves and if legal, is obviously <15 watts
!!! There's always money somewhere for the next upgrade... !!!

Hi James,
the Armageddon is an interesting one. As you all know we don't fit an illuminated logo as it does affect the units performance.
However, there is a handy tell-tale that the unit is on - the platter on the LP12 will be spinning!
Richard
p.s. Obviously this is only indicated if the LP12 is connected to the Armageddon. This is one reason why we have to use the special shrouded connector on the Armageddon.

richard i think you were correct in the earlier post about powered gear, this was one of the reasons micromega changed the stage series players from 123 to 456 the first ones had no standby indicator the newer ones did.
