Is there any point to the Brit awards

Posted by: Guido Fawkes on 20 February 2008

I suppose this the modern equivalent of the Melody Maker or NME poll awards of years gone by - but what puzzles me is that with so many good modern artists around why did not a single one of them get a mention - dross after dross after dross picked up awards. I only watched it to see Paul McCartney - thought he was mediocre, but by far and away the best thing I saw on there. Was Amy Winehouse drunk or she is always like that?

I think they should have re-titled the show what not to buy.

Made the folk awards seem wonderful.

Rant over - any more balanced views than mine?

I must be getting very old.

Pretty pointless really. I used to enjoy the Mercury Music Prize but that too has become just another marketing tool for the big record companies.

Damn, I'm starting to sound like a grumpy old codger!

The problem is simple ...many of the awards are made with the mainstream in mind and the Brits let's the public vote! so obviously (however snobbish this may sound) the lowest common denominator will always win out. Let's face it this programme is shown at prime time on ITV who are not in the slightest bit interested in airing groundbreaking music.

The reality is much of the sort of music we discuss on sites like this means nothing to 99% of the general population ...all ITV want from The Brits is viewing figures ...Take That get bums on seats ....Psychedelic Folk Punk doesn't!

I recorded it &fast forward it through the Dross yes Roft ,Amy is always like that I don't know why she even attemps to dance or move at all .& who was that 12 year old kid Mark Ronson???

ROTF,

I was thinking the same thing as I stood in the BPI's London office this Monday standing by an 8 foot replica of the award statue looking at photo's of previous years winners, do they celebrate the diversity and quality of British music or just who's the biggest sellers?

In order for people to buy quality original music they have to be exposed to it in the first place.

Q. Is there any point to the Brit awards?

A. No

Surely it's only there as an excuse for Top Gear to make stretch limos to pick some of them up in.

We've only just had this episode in Oz where we're about a year behind.

Cheers

The "basically" is superfluous but otherwise pretty much on the money...

Award ceremonies are great from a production point of view. It's cheap publicity from cheap TV. That it's content-free is not really an issue...

Q. Is there any point to the Brit awards?

A. Yes.

It gives my children something to talk about in the playground, so that they don't get beaten up for being geeky swats.

My parents didn't like TOTP (in its heyday I mean!) or a whole load of other stuff I liked as a teenager.

Yes, I agree about the Brits being rubbish, brown-nosing etc. But it's easy to be snooty about something not really intended for the over-50s/40s/30s...

i dont understand why they bother to try to speak after getting an "award" ?
i mean - they are either pissed as farts or drugged out of their heads...cue amy.........
they then proceed to make themselves right prats waffling on about utter shite!!
on top of all that they mime and its presented by the adams family. Eek
SO NO THERE ISNT MUCH POINT. scotty
p.s. do as we do in our house - turn it off!

I don't normally watch these things but for various reasons I didn't really have much choice with this and to be honest enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to. I thought it was nice to see Sir Paul looking happy and relaxed for a change, and really enjoyed his set. It was the first time I'd seen Amy Winehouse in action and felt extremely uneasy watching her. She looked awkward and uncomfortable, as though she didn't want to be there, and if this her normal on stage behaviour I'd suggest she finds some other way of making a living. And what about Vic Reeves? Hilarious.

Pete & Dave (scotty) have pretty much got it.
I started to watch it as a "family duty" but couldn't bear it, & sent the teenage foster kids upstairs to watch it, while us old fogeys watched Grand Designs instead.
The foster kids think Grand Designs is boring, but thought The Brits was "class", sadly confirming Jet Johnsons post.

How did Grand Designs turn out? The last thing I remember was the German prefab arriving ... and the next thing Gordon Ramsey shouting at somebody. I nodded off...

Grand designs house turned out OK. Nice inside, quite modern, peculiar colour schemes (to me, anyway)--lilac kitchen work tops!!
Fugly externally, but very teutonic build quality. The delays were down to the local stone that they wanted to clad the outside walls with.
All the stuff done by the brits suffered delays/problems, & all the German stuff went without a hitch, iirc.
You didn't miss much. Still better than the Brits though.
Matt.

hi matt,
hows the injury going ?
regards, dave

Hi Dave,
The plaster is coming off next week, at Chelmsford Hospital. The consultant will assess my arm, probably some more xrays & then another plaster, or brace of some description will be fitted. So basically, it is going OK, but its the consultants opinion that really matters, not mine.
The elbow is bending & all fingers moving freely, but I can't rotate/swivel the joint at all yet, so theres still an awful lot of work to be done.
Cheers for the concern,
Matt.

I'm occasionally presently surprised, but generally yes, it's a bit of a waste of time.

Basically it is industry brown nosing itself.

More like white nosing methinks.

That's just what I was thinking too!

I haven't watched it since the Mick Fleetwood/ Sam Fox debacle all those years ago on the grounds that no matter how putrid or bizarre it could never better that evening!

But is there a point to it? I think we can be too snobby about this stuff. I guess there is in a way in that I'd rather my children have an interest in music through th Brits rather than no interest at all and in reality it's just an industry like any other going through its business.

Watch it if you want - switch off if you don't is my take.

I would like to see instead of the BRITS awards the Classic Rock and Pogressive Rock re-union providing there are no shite current rock groups like 'The Foo'. I would allow Muse to appear apart from that old rockers and hippies only.

Ask the record companies.
