One is the loneliest number / Music featured in TV shows

Posted by: Gavin B on 05 July 2005

In the last couple of weeks, "One is the loneliest number" featured on the TV programme 'House' (Ch5).

I recognise the song, and felt sure I'd listened to it on a recent freebie compilation CD, but then couldn't find it.

So, two questions...
1. Who's the artist? (Aimee Mann does a version - was that it?)
2. Are there any good sites listing the music featured in TV shows? House, CSI, etc. etc. all seem to feature tracks that never get credited - where do I find details?

Thanks

Gavin
(Oh, and does anyone remember it featuring on any recent compilations?)

Tv @Film Music

BTW Unusually CSI programmes credit the title music (tracks by The Who) but as usual not the incidental music.

Hi, I think it is Aimeee Mann and it features on the Magnolia soundtrack. Originally it was recorded by Harry Nielsen?

AMG does not give a hit to either of them under that title. Or to Aimee Mann for the "Magnolia" OST album.

Three Dog Night did the original, or so I thought. Harry wrote it, though... if he recorded it, I've never heard his version.

There's a version by Al Kooper on his 1969 album "I Stand Alone" which must be one of the earliest if not the earliest version.

The only reference I can find is this.

"One" was the opening track on Three Dog Night's debut album (also from '69 I think), so these must have been more or less contemporary.

Couldn't find any TV music on the link higher up. Any others?

"One" was written by Harry Nilsson and is on his album Aerial Ballet (1968) - I think this was Harry's second album, Pandemonium Shadow Show (1967) being the great man's first. For some strange reason Harry re-recorded selected tracks from his first two albums for his 1971 elpee Aerial Pandemonium Ballet. This includes another version of One as the last track on Side 2. You can get all three of these albums on a double CD package with a nice booklet. The music is superb and Daddy's Song is restored to Aerial Ballet; apparently, it was deleted from the original elpee by the record company so as not to detract from sales of the Monkees cover version.
