Canadian's play Country with "edge"

On a recent visit to Canada I was recommended a band called Blue Rodeo. Seriously good outfit. Buy "5 Days in July" you won't be dissapointed, if you like this sort of thing....

This is one of my all-time desert island disks. Although 'country' may be too tight of a pidgeon-hole for it. It is pretty much a 'live' recording with all the instruments played at the same time instead of layered in on a multitrack, very tight but not overly polished. The first track has some very vintage NeilYougish guitar breaks for instance. The presence of Sara McLachlan on a few tracts lifts the entire disk up to the sublime level. Towards the end of the disk is the most gorgeous acapella harmony between Sara and the other band members, with every voice being perfectly in tune and abundantly emotive (not to mention carved out in a physical 3-dimensional space). I have both the US and Canadian CD releases, and I hate to say it, but the Canadian one is rather better.Don't ask why, just BUY. The other Blue Rodeo albums (eg Tremolo) are merely good, but have non of the pure magic that this delectable disk seems to find.

For some inexpicable reason I seem to remember that although the title is '5 days in July' (? the month and time took to record it?), the 'title' track has the words '5 days in May'. Maybe because it follows the meter of the other lyrics better.

Thanks Doug

Gives me the opportunity to 'come out of the closet' and admit to liking the 'acceptable face of country music'

My obscure Canadian recommendation to you is 'Jim Bryson And The Occasionals' (Upright Records - UPCD 003).

Bob Harris has championed 'Blue Rodeo' I believe, and if you music lovin' muthas approve; that's good enough for me.

I'm off to A&B.

I'm going to Canada next week for "5 Days in Montreal" I'll try and get a Canadian copy. Talking of Canadian I truely believe that Joni Mitchells Travellogue is her greatest work. If you don't posses this I urge you to get sorted immediately!

Got it!

Arrived from Djangos today.

Strange album - some tracks of appalling 'Ye-ha' country stuff; but:-

The title track is superb.

'What Is This Love' is mesmerising and magnificent.

'Dark Angel' is the other gem, as far as I am concerned.

Pretty good on balance - thanks Doug.

Don't forget the Be Good Tanyas who I assume are Canadian due to the many Vancouver references in the sleevenotes. Their new album is really superb and really grows on you.

I agree with Doug about Joni's Travelog, except not quite her greatest (Hissing and Hejira, surely?). But it is brilliant and miles better than the standards album.

Nickel Creek are also dead good (though not Canadian, as far as I know).
