Unplugging lingo

Posted by: ebirah on 17 June 2001

Some of you guys have been recommending that the Linn Lingo is unplugged when listening to CD because of some sort of an earth loop (?). For my info, what do I need to unplug - the Lingo mains plug from the wall or the lead from the Linn to the Lingo - at the moment I'm doing both and its a right royal pain. I also hear there's a lead available that eliminates this problem; what is it and where do I get it? Thanks in advance.

Steve are you actually hearing a problem through your speakers?

I have had a Lingo connected to my 52/135s system for years and have never experienced any kind of earth hum or degradation of audio signal when sourcing from the CDS.

I wonder if this is a problem in countries where maybe the earthing arrangements are different to here in the UK...or maybe the age of the electrical installation in the house has something to do with it?

Remember the old adage posted here may times...if it ain't broke don't fix it!

It will be interesting to read comments from users with similar set-ups from around the world.

Let's see if we can draw some conclusions from evidence sent in.

I have an early (1990) Lingo.

When listening to CD I unplug the Lingo mains plug from a 4-way adapter and disconnect the arm leads and earth from the pre-amp. I have never bothered to unplug the lead from the Lingo to the LP12.

Keeping the Lingo plugged in kills the music on my CDX in my house - mid-seventies wiring with no dedicated spur. As far as I can tell bringing the LP12 into the room makes no difference.

BTW I don't find that the Lingo takes very long to warm up.

I've just changed my SBLs for a pair of speakers that have changed my life - I won't post until I'm sure I'm out of the honeymoon period. It's just that the change meant I couldn'e use my Linn and it all had to be unplugged for a while. My CDs started sounding incredible and, although I accept most of this may be a result of my new speakers, I thought some could be due to the Lingo being out of circuit - many have posted here that this has an efect on CD playback (like Chris here). There's certainly no hum in my system. I guess I'll just sit down one night and do some exhaustive A/B listening and make my mind up for myself. In the meantime, I was just wondering exactly what needs to be unplugged?
