England's World Cup bid

Posted by: TomK on 02 December 2010

What a major poke in the eye that was. Completely absurd in fact. 1966 would have been mentioned far more than I'd have wanted to hear but it would have been a first class tournament in a real football country with guaranteed full houses in first class stadia. The best TV coverage, if not commentary, and the games would have been played at sociable times in pleasant conditions.
No logic to this decision whatsoever.

Plenty of logic in both choices encapsulated in 2 words: new markets. The Bernie Ecclestone approach to global sporting domination has been heartily embraced by Fifa. You read it here first, the 2026 World Cup will be in China.

The miracle is that we got 2 votes, after all one of them was from the English delegate.....Presumably.

Funny thing is, I beleive the rest of the world realised the result was a given - They want the Asian markets. A clown, juggler and 3 Kangaroos could have shown up - The votes would have remained the same...

Shoulda been England.

Now that would have been a tournament.

No the 2 words were "back handers".

Like handbags for all the delegates wives, premier league teams flying out to voting nations and setting up coaching academies and England playing meaningless friendlies similarly?

+1

I'm not sure there is much point in the World Cup any longer - the competition has been devalued and perhaps we need to move on from having national football teams. If FIFA didn't exist who'd care or even notice.

Snap.

The chance to miss out was just too good. Panarama probably did not help.

If the reports about Russia posted on the Wikileaks website are true that corruption is endemic in all walks of life from top to bottom and the country is run by a mafia elite answerable only to themselves, it hardly comes as any surprise that FIFA have embraced a "fellow traveller".

After the Panorama expose I had reservatons about giving FIFA the rights to bypass our taxation rules etc.
The Dutch bidders were not happy about the strings attached by FIFA to bidders and refused to accept many of them. The English bid (presumably like other bidders) said come along here and we'll lift our skirts higher for you !
FIFA is an organisation of footballing countries. What would they do if the British Home countries left the organisation because it was corrupt? Presumably other countries feel equally perturbed by FIFA and would wish to break away.
Just a thought.

Russia already has the most expensive hotel accommodation in the world. Add to that a 2 million people increase in demand, and no fans will be able to afford to go. Happily this coincides with lovely FIFA (each of which's 'F's stands for 'fecking') being able to command more sponsorship, so the stadiums* will be stuffed full of disinterested people on jollies drinking shitty rice-beer. And that is really good for football obviously.

And Qatar is really hot. Even shitty rice-beer might taste okay**. Great for football!

*Am I alone in thinking everyone suddenly using the word 'stadia' is just a bit too much? "Fora" is definitely just plain wrong (the Romans didn't pluralise the word 'forum', it was - then - only ever singular. For them the plural of 'forum' was 'forum'.) What's wrong with saying 'stadiums'? We don't routinely pluralise words we've nicked from other languages in their original manner. If you don't pay 'insurance premia', then call them stadiums. Please.

** Except of course Qatar is a Muslim state where drinking is both difficult and horror-film-scarily expensive. Currently the whole country has only two shops licensed to sell alcohol. Great.

Good. We'll be saved the sight of pissed English fans wrecking bars and disgracing the nation.

I`m also glad we failed to get the world cup here because it would have bought nothing but trouble and heartache for the fans when their beloved team are knocked out of the comp, that`s if the team turn up in the first place wanting to wear the jersey with pride

When you enter a bidding process or other competition, you agree to abide by the rules. If the findings of the media regarding bribes made a difference, the time to pull out was there and then. Otherwise, let's move on.

at least the english bid was beaten by a real country. qatar? I think the two words are b.s.
Posted on: 03 December 2010 by csl
the next round of bribes will surround who gets the free pass of being placed into their group.
Posted on: 03 December 2010 by BigH47
Isle of Wight should bid next time, it's bigger than Qatar at least.

You do realise England didn't bid for the 22 world cup which Qatar won don't you?
Posted on: 03 December 2010 by csl
yes i do.

Perhaps next time people will read the conditions of entry for any competition, if it says not from big countries as this one did (FIFA wanted to spread the location of the matches to the rest of the world) then you do not enter or only make a token bid. That way you do not waste time and money.

This was an affirmative action competition, to qualify you had to demonstrate inadequacy.

When asked who was the best Qatar player?

Blatter replied Eric Clapton

Boris has withdrawn the free stays for FIFA at the Dorchester during the 2012 Olympics.

Boris - you are a star

Why the f%$# would/should they be given free stays at the Dorchester in the first place? WTF?

I'm extraordinarily happy that Qatar has the World Cup. This is because I am now unlikely to be inconvenienced by it in the slightest. Let the whole thing disappear up its own, corrupt @r$e as far as I'm concerned.
