The Streamline W196R is here~!

It was produced between Circa '54-55.
The Merc. was so ahead of its time. ( note the *used soap* current automobile design. Big Grin)
I think this is soo cooool!

Misread the title and thought this was another thread on steam irons.

Here (hopefully) are a few pics of the winning car on its last ever outing before being put into Mercs museum. It was re-built after its outing at Goodwood last year & they had special permission for it to be shown 1 last time.
A truly magnificent beast.

Love the blueing of the chrome on the exhaust pipes - an indication of a car that was driven as it was intended !!!

It's a serious car that has an engine so large that the driver if forced to sit nearly over the rear axle. Eek

Steve,

Thanks for the photos!
It looks to me like they are two seaters?
Interesting to see the same plaid seat covers.

Can't tell if your picture is of the real thing or a model. However, if you're interested in a model, CMC Models makes a real beauty of this and other Mercedes in 1/18 scale.

I thought Kuma's pictures were definitely a model. Not sure if it's plastic or metal - but I'm guessing plastic.

Deane

Well the CMC's are in metal and are fabulous if you're into that sort of thing. Kind of the superficial toy interest that keeps one from thinking heavy thoughts if you get my drift! Winker

Kuma,
The W196 in your photographs is a true 'streamliner' design. It was built to compete on the very fast circuits of the 1954 GP seasson, where its aerodynamic shape gave it a massive advantage.
It won first time out (1st & 2nd) at Reims to Fangio & Kling.
I have somewhere some photos of a meticulously re built one that had lain dormant for 40 years after being raced by Moss.
The SLR 300 in my Photos is basically a 'sports car' twin seat version of the single seat W196 GP car.
It is the actual one raced by Sir Stirling Moss in the record breaking Mille Miglia race of 1955 when he & 'Jenks' covered the 1000 miles at an average speed of 97.95 mph! They were, for me, the pinacle of Mercedes Benz design.
If you can find any photos of the Audi streamliner design (fully enclosed cockpit) be prepared to fall in love.

PS.. Audi Pic can be found hereif your interested.

This was also on show at Goodwood in 2002/3 if I remember correctly. What a flippin glorious sight.

ha. clay, this IS CMC.

This particular modle is one of the best one I've seen from them. ( I collect not too many but few selected 18:1 scale models ) My collection tends to be all German ( Merc. or Auto Union )

Deane, all CMC models use metal body.

Steve,

thanks for the links!
Yeah. i knew a W196 won at Reims.

Funny you mentioned Audi.. I like few Auto Union C types. Great great industrial and mechanical design.

Mercedes had several "streamliners" over the '30s the AVUS Mercedes was one for use on the bonkers AVUS "street" circuit almost 12 miles of it.

I have most of the Mercedes and Auto Union myself. Just picked up the new Maserati 250F which you might like. A real classic. Saw a prototype Ferrari 250 GT short wheelbase which also looked good. CMC seem to be branching out.
