I'm just about to upgrade my system which exists
of the following:
CD3
NAC 102
NAC102, NAPSC
Hi-Cap
NAP250
Linn Kheilidh
My dealer recommends to change CD 3 first (CDX)and later (about 6-8 months) upgrading the loudspeaker. That's what I think as well but there's a problem with the speakers: They seem to have a problem with the bass control (they go very deep but loose control)
Questions: what does the CDX to the system (when changing first) Is it getting even worse? (My impression is that the Kheilids are not able to
hold the level of the amps) Will the bass problem
be solved with a better speaker meanwhile?
If yes, I'd rather go this way.
PS: just for information. the speaker will probably be Pro Acs Response 2.5.
Thanks for any advice.
Cheers

When you upgrade from CD3 to CDX, you'll be amazed at how much better the bass is from your speakers. The same applies to the upgrade to CDX/XPS. Do both of those (and possible the final step to CDS2) before changing your speakers.

Retro,
I am in a similar situation. I currently have a CDX on dem at home (replaces 3.5/FC) into 102/NAPSC/180/Keilidh.
The CDX does wonders for the bass quality, cleaning it up and making it much more tuneful & controlled.
So I would agree that the CDX is definitely the way to go.
I have no wish to change my speakers, but I also realise how personal speaker chioce is. I think that you would be best demming the various options and deciding then.

My experience with Keilids is that their weaknesses definitely do not lie in bass drive and control. In fact they seem to excell in this area in particular.
I would investigate the CDX option, but I would also look at equipment supports. My QS Reference table is now installed after much cursing and swearing

and one of the benefits it brings, is excellent bass grip and extension - allowing low notes to exploit their fullest envelope - and the pitch and timing is superb.

It's always a nice day for it, have a good one

The CDX is a great upgrade and adding XPS more so. I never really liked the CD 3.5 finding it a bit 'technical' sounding. Not sure that it would normally be the cause of your bass problem though.
I have some experience via a friend of Linn Keilidhs and I would say that bass can be very solid and even overbearing in his system which has the speakers mounted on the KuStone bases. When he removed these it became a bit loose and flabby (all with a Linn CD player). This might give you a couple of simpler options.
Just wondered about cabling/stands/positioning too-if bass is poor with these speakers then something may be awry other than the source which needs sorting before you put your hand in your wallet.

The sequence should be:
1.CDX
2.NAC82
3.XPS
4.Supercap
4.5.Speakers.
I've put speakers down as a 4 and a half because it partly depends on room & preferences. In spite of the Keilidhs failings though, they are capable of very good results with the right front-end.

Reto,
I would go for the CDX followed by the XPS. If you still not happy with the bass control, change the speakers. I've owned Keilidhs and I think that the bass can get a bit too much with a large amp (mostly heard them with Linn amps) if the room conditions isn't perfect. (I'm not suggesting that large amps normally gives you less bass control, just that this is my experience in this particular case).
BTW I think Proac makes great speakers I've owned Tablette III:s and I've listened to several of their models. Personally I prefer the smaller models. My favourite is the 1 SC.
