"New" dealer in Yorkshire
Posted by: Jez Quigley on 02 November 2002
Well, well, well - this doesn't happen everyday. There is to be a new Naim dealer in Leeds. Andy Oliver who quite a few of you will remember as the former manager of Image Hi-Fi in Headingley is opening his own shop. I've always had excellent service from him and now that he is free to do his own thing I'm expecting something special.
The shop is to be called the Audio Republic, 78 Otley Road, Headingley, Leeds, LS6 4BA, TEL 0113 2177294, and there will be a website launched in a couple of weeks -
www.audiorepublic.co.uk.
The shop opens next Saturday 9th November and there will be a Naim evening on Wednesday 11th December with, I'm told, a selection of French wines to enjoy while the Cdx2, Xps2, Nap500 and Nac552 and SL2`s strut their stuff.

Jez,
Is that anywhere near where Audio Projects used to be? Whatever happened to them?
Regards,
Ed.

It's about a mile and a half or so further along the road, just the other side of the main part of Headingley.
Audio Projects were just great in the late '70s and 80's weren't they? They are still in business, doing Linn etc but they went lifestyle/multiroom/av in the nineties and lost the Naim franchise AFAIK.

Interesting... will try to go to the Naim evening to hear the 552 esp. if we can compare it to a 52!
I wonder what Hamish and David think at the Sound org in York?
Jez, do you use the Sound Org?

I have had good service from Andy at Image, I shall keep the address in mind, although i'm rather satisfied with my kit as it is.

There has been a Naim presence of one sort or another in Leeds since the early days.

There is an error in the web address - it should be
www.audio-republic.co.uk , although it isn't live yet anyway.

Hi all:
You guys in the homeland are so bleedin' well serviced. My local dealer here in Dallas has nothing above the 5 series.
I'd love to hear some of the new stuff, so I hope the Chris's at NANA can find someone reasonably close to carry the banner properly. i.e, not "Oooh, but the Audio Research is so much more airy..."
I swear I'm going to hurl if I hear that again.
Best Regards,

Mark, you could always move to Yorkshire, God's own county, where He makes sure our earth rods are always kept suitably damp

I spoke to Andy at the Audio-Republic today. He tells me that the Naim demo will be from 4.30 to 8pm ish (Wednesday 11th December). Contact him for tickets.
There will be two systems playing, a 5 series in the shop itself, which will remain pretty static apart from adding power supplies and going from nait to pre power, and then the main one in the dem room, into which we can substitute anything we like. It will be fronted by well run in SL2s.
The website is still not live unfortunately.

Thanks to Andy, Julie and Paul Darwin for an enjoyable evening.
As I happened to be working in the area that afternoon I arrived an hour early. Paul was still setting up the new kit. From switch on it sounded nice, but a little bright and 'lite' a couple of hours later it was heavenly. I stopped using my hi fi critic ears and just luxuriated in Eric Bibb's 'Five miles above' - an appropriate title!
The system was CDX2/XPS2/Super2/282/new250/SL2s, all on a mixture of QS bogs and standard QS. A 'Well-Tempered' TT did the analog stuff. Usually it is very obvious when the source is switched from TT to CDP, but with the CDX2 only the hypercritical would notice or care. There was such a liquidity to the music.
On to the shop, my first visit. It is not at all like a traditional hi-fi shop, much more like a domestic environment dedicated to enjoying music reproduction. Highly recommended.
Unexpected tit-bit: Paul Darwin is a closet Grateful Deadhead.
