nVi not reading discs
Posted by: oldandfeeble on 24 December 2006
My nVi just froze while playing a DVD, as though the disc had been paused. Then it refused to open. After turning the power off, it opened and shut rapidly a few times and I managed to snatch the disc from the drawer (stop laughing). Power off again. Now it seems to be unable to read discs, won't play etc. When I insert discs that have played before, it spends a while trying to read them, then shows a "0.00" display and only reluctantly opens to allow the disc to be retrieved. No difference whether I am using the remote or the handset. What's going on? Any suggestions, or have I got a lemon?

Sorry you are having this problem. Try switching power on and off from the rear, this should help to get its knickers out of a twist. Make sure you wait 3 minutes before switching back on after switching off.
I am not sure how old your machine is and the software issue you are using as this appears to be a problem which only happened with early code. I know its not much help today but your dealer can supply a code up date which will stop this from happening again.

Many thanks for the prompt response. Unfortunately, this hasn't fixed the problem, so I assume I will have to get the code up date you mention. By the way, how is the code supplied if my machine won't read or recognise discs? My machine is new, bought October '06, in Sydney Australia. And is switching the power on and off from the rear what is referred to in some forum posts as a "hard reboot"?

Sorry to hear of your problems.
I am also considering a n-Vi to replace all those boxes but keep reading all the troubles, makes me nervous.
I did get the occasional glitch with the 282, freezing itself and not responding to any buttons pushed when powered from a poweramp, thankfully none sinced Hicaped.
Possibly something to do with the voltage spikes within the unit's power supply??????
Naim make great musical replay items but they are no better with computer software than their competitors. Some would even say worse given the software issues with the n-Vi.

software revisions.
take Paul's advice and get your firmware updated via your dealer

Thanks. I shall follow up my dealer. However, there are two points I should make.
First, I am a little surprised that a unit bought in October needs a firmware upgrade in December. The unit was not sitting around in a warehouse waiting for me to buy it - I had to wait for a shipment to arrive - so I assume it cannot have left the factory much before I bought it. The serial number is 235994, so perhaps you can tell me when it was shipped and when the firmware revision you mention was released. Also, if the unit is not reading discs (DVDs or CDs), how does it load the new firmware?
Secondly, all these tweaks and hacks that one finds out about only when something goes wrong or when anxiously browsing this forum; why are they not more widely available? I am also waiting for information from my dealer about the "factory reset procedure", in case that fixes the problem. As someone with a considerable investment in the Naim brand (CDX2/XPS, 282/Supercap, 250, SL2s, CD5x/Flatcap, n-Vi, nSats/Cent/Sub, and even an iSupply!), it is infuriating that this information is not widely and simply available, for example in the manuals. Why so nerdish? Do we have to wait for a Rough Guide or Naim For Complete Idiots?

MG, all points taken we are reviewing our info lines for update issues, we are closed right now so I am not sure if you have the current software version or not. Your dealer can help and if you are not happy I am sure the dealer can arrange via the distributor to change your machine over.
As more features are added to the n-vi and new updates are required to match up newer displays etc, software updates are here to stay.We can for sure do better how we handle this for you.

I also am having this problem occasionally and I bought the machine in Early Dec. I find this more often with my old discs and some bollywood movies!
I attributed this to buggy software and I am coping with this as the music and movies are great . My system is nac 112/nap 150/CD5 with unity gain enabled.

kuma: rotfl exactly the picture I had in mind when I read MG's last commentary - spooky!
I hope naim will send a free copy to our dealers (ouch!). With a guide "soft transition from diamond stylus to blue laser". It's explained how you can add one channel a week, not to suffer the nasty multichannel shock...
Blyme when they have to install naim-net!?

oh yes. and Nuno will write a forward paragraph!
Probably not too funny for folks who own a troubled n-Vi.
One of these days, I would love to consolidate all those home cinema boxes and get an n-Vi but I am still waiting for dust to settle. ( sort of )

Of course - this joke was on me! I had my own troubles to get through (av2+preamp), even though I let out this one.
I really hope you n-vi owners get your blackboxes well soon. Or how it's said in "Don't let me be misunderstood": Live has it's problems, and I get my share...
