Digital Cameras

Posted by: Milan on 24 November 2005

Any of you people have experience of the Sony DSC H1, Panasonic FZ30 or Fuji S9500. I would be interested in you opinions or any alternatives as I am looking to get a reasonable camera. I have considered a Nikon D50 but am not sure I want the bulk. It would however give some use the the existing 35mm stuff I have.

Which prosumer, or a D50?

I'd suggest that any of the prosumer cameras would frustrate you if you have used an SLR before, especially if you have some suitable lenses hanging around.
D50 all the way, and I'm a Canon man.

The point is whether you want to compose the picture by looking through the lens or by looking at a little television screen,

Or a bigger TV screen if you use the video cable. Cool

Milan,

I have always been a NIKON man. I still use two F2s which I have since 1974 and an F3 which I bought later. The cameras and the optics are just excellent.
I am finally going to try some digital photography, and I think I am going with the Nikon D200 which is coming out next month. The D50 got excellent reviews in the US.

I went to the Nikon UK launch of the D200, and had a go with it. I can't help feeling that it has been made to a price point between the D70s and D2x, rather than the best camera Nikon could do. The sensor technology is moving so fast, that the D200 could have easily matched or bettered the D2x. That said, it is a lot of camera for a very fair price.

Main niggles are; lack of mirror lock-up for shooting, and non-compatibility of D70 batteries or any non-Nikon batteries.

The Canon EOS 20D is very nice ... very fast, great with low light. At just over $1000US, a successful intersection between features, quality, and price. A friend has one and I have serious camera envy.

I have a small Pentax Optio 750z, which is a very nice point-and-shoot with lots of manual controls, but I'm frequently up against its limitations, which I would be with any P&S. Gotta have a DSLR.
