Roadside cameras to catch drivers using their mobile phones

Posted by: Steve Toy on 07 March 2006

I agree that anyone holding me up by zig-zagging infront of me at 33mph in a 60 because they are on their bloody phone, should be given ten lashes of the Cat.

However, catching these twunts should be left to the discretion of traffic police. I hate remote surveillance technology in principle. Next we'll be getting fines coming in through the post for driving without due care for the following:

Picking your nose.

Scratching an itch.

Talking to your passenger.

Resting your left hand on the gear stick or hand brake.

Crossing your arms when steering.

Smoking.

Popping a boiled sweet into your mouth.

Putting sunglasses on or readjusting your mirror while moving.

I put forward my arguments steve, do not see the point in going over the same thing all the time, I have made my point everyone else theirs too, somewhere there has to be a point where carrying on pulling in your own direction does not always solve issues.

I just wondered that's all, given thev shift in your position.

Devil's advocacy is a good thing in my book, btw.

Ok steve Winker it is'nt a shift in my position as such, maybe a realisation that this topic can go on forever without any sensible outcome apart from everyone putting their tuppence in, which is great imo.
I still hold the belief that they are cash cows, nothing will shift my opinion on that, but I will not lose sleep if somebody thinks contrary to me, that is what debate is all about, but there comes a time when views become entrenched, or they can seem to be, so I feel better just to make known how I feel on the subject.
Just because a motorist is flashed at by one of these gatso's does not mean they are guilty, they are ( if they receive the nip in the post ) being accused of speeding, as in every situation, alleged speeding is no different, a person is innocent until proven guilty, if people are concerned about court time being wasted in hearing these suspect cases then it is not the fault of the accused, it is the fault of the system that has produced the nip.
I do try to look at things from both angles, but sadly, recent stories about speed detection methods does not get my confidence in the system.
How is the work going steve? Winker

The Head of Environmental Health seems to be crumbling under the weight of the elected committee that oversees the licensing and enforcement issues for taxis in the district. This committee is on my side. Smile

Hopefully democracy and the public interest will prevail over the ego of a small-minded bureaucrat whose favourite saying is,

"I don't make the law I only enforce it."

I didn't vote for them and neither did the majority of people living in England.

This is true, but unfornately the majority of people in England didn't vote for ANYONE, so what do you expect? It seems people are more interested in Pop Idol, so let them eat cake.

As for the kiddy curfew idea - sounds good to me. There's no need for more than 2 people to hang around after dark at whatever age unless they're up to no good...

A novel idea - legalise all drugs and tax them to the hilt. Revenue, control, and saves a lot of money. So would giving convicted rapists, murderers and pedder-asses a lethal injection, but I digress. Shipman, Sutcliffe, Nillsen, Hindley etc - THOUSANDS of pounds wasted on lowlifes that should have been hanged.

Didn't see a single gatso in Rome, but saw loads of cops!

The locals still drove round like mad - no wonder Ferrari's are so quick!

Italy is a very car-centred society. If only it was like that here.
Posted on: 24 March 2006 by andy c
You are joking! I have never seen so many cars with dents on them!

and the air....

Still, the food was to die for, and the people are sooo freindly...

The problem in Rome is that the public transport system is so dire.

Sound familiar?

Now on that we agree, Steve.

It is good tho that most of the things a 1st time visitor to Rome wishes to see are within walking distance.

I have a v special picture, just to show I am human after all, that I'll post later Winker
