Just How Much Better...

...is the 112/150 combo over the Nait 5?

With reasonably efficient speakers and sane listening levels, is there much of a difference?

I know this is a "newbie" type of question, but now that I'm *really* thinking about plonking down my hard-earned dosh, I thought I would ask.

Greg,

Why don't you book a demo with your local dealer and go and hear the difference for yourself.

No experience of the 112/150 or the Nait 5 but I remember going for a demonstration of the mission cyrus amplifier, then hearing the original Nait and thinking wow what an improvement.

I was prepared to purchase the Naim Nait until someone said try this. It was the 42-5/110. I thought it will be just the same as the Nait, but when they played it the improvement was just amazing. The sound was just bigger and better and although the 42-5/110 was more than I wanted to pay I just had to have one.

"Why don't you book a demo with your local dealer and go and hear the difference for yourself."

Always good advice - except I'm planning on buying second hand and have found 112/150 and CD5 all available from a good source.

I originally bought 72/hicap/140 over a Nait 3 a few years ago when I was doing this but thought that the 72/140 without the cap wasn't worth the price difference to me and that the Nait, not having the interonnect, seemed a bit smoother sounding. I never tried Nait 3 with a *-cap as the Nait 3 available for demo hadn't been modded to accept a *-cap.

I have a good bit of Naim listening experience, but not with the new kit frown so I don't know if I would have the same judgment now. Its also different with 2nd hand prices - the 112/150 can be had 2nd hand for a smidge more than a new Nait 5 and Nait 5s don't seem to drop as much in price when they are 2nd hand. At least not yet.

The suggestions of older 2nd-hand kit (42's, 62's, etc) are good except we really want a remote. I also found the 72/hi/140 I had to be very touchy regards settup and I like the sound of the new kit. So...

After 884 posts you have finally succumbed to Naim. Is there anyone else on the forum with hundreds of posts who owns no Naim?

You're not related to Nuno are you? big grin

I am sure that any good Naim dealer would allow you to go and listen to the new range of Naim gear.

My dealers appreciate that not everyone can make a purchase everytime they visit their shop. They are willing to invest time in a possible future customer. My dealer has also allowed me to listen to Naim items and then we have discused buying second hand. He even recommended a second hand seller to me.

...Seagull. I DID own a full Naim system and sold it off.

Still have a few of the RCA->DIN interconnects and have an LP12 big grin

I love the company but have to contend with poor local dealers (NO home dems available), low availability of 2nd-hand kit here (the US), and the considerably higher prices here than in the UK. I would probably have a house full of the stuff if I lived in the UK.

Nuno, you make laugh.

Greg,

I had a home dem of the Nait 5 and good though it was I could hear quieter instruments dissappear on complex passages.

I then tried the 112/150 and found it much better. Well worth the extra if you can afford it.

Hope it helps.

Yep, that'll be me. I've given Naim a number of auditions at each step down the line, but it's never quite been the sound I was after. I'm currently running along the 'horizon' of flat and round earths with a Clearaudio Evolution TT, Resolution Audio Opus 21 CD, DNM 3B Primus, DNM PA3^S and Neat Petite III/Gravitas on custom Mana stands, the rest of the gear on QS Reference. Cabling is Nordost SPM throughout except between TT and preamp.

Anyway, I digress. I stick around here because, apart from an understandable Naim bias, there's lots to learn and it's an interesting melting pot of different approaches and personalities, especially in the Music Room, in which I spend a lot of the time finding new sounds to check out...

I went from Nait 5/FC2/CD5 to 112/FC2/150. I owned the Nait for a year before making the jump.
The 112/150 is very good, betters the Nait in low frequency extension, and overall resolution. It also allows more options for speakers. BUT, I don't think it makes music any better. The Nait 5 paired w/Epos 14's was a kick ass system.
If you're buying to settle in and listen to tunes, and you can drive the speakers of your choice with the Nait, well, there you go. In a balanced system the Nait is very hard to beat

Having more wattage power isn't the be-all-and-end-all of the improvements to be derived from an upgrade from a Nait 5 to a Nac 112/Nap 150.

The old Nac 92/Nap 90 was an improvement over the Nait 3, and yet the power output was still the same with the Nap 90 as with the Nait 3 @ 30wpc/8 Ohms.

Having a separate box (handling the delicate input signal from your source component) to the box driving your speakers - preferably sited two shelves apart on a decent rack - has a lot more to do with any sonic/musical gain, but you'll never know until you get a decent source like the CD5... razz

Steve.
