St Germain

I suggest you all go out and buy the 'St Germain - Tourist' album. It is on Blue Note and is stunning; very much in a similar vain to first Guru Jazzmataz album. Also, anyone who doubts the low bass abillity of Sbl's should hear this album through a pair!

I bought it on LP, it only has two tracks per side so the grooves are not squashed together. This helps with the bass apparently.

Bought it on Saturday, and other than the repetitious vocal sample on the first track really getting on my wick it is a really good album.

In some ways it reminds me of the Us 3 album 'Hand on the torch' which was Blue Notes first venture in to the dance related genre - the way that jazz riffs and samples are cut in with sampled drum loops is similar, though there is no rapping here, and the songs seem to have more space to develop. In parts it even veers into dub reggae (which is more than fine by me), though on the whole the feel is pretty much mid-point between sixties Blue Note and pretty conventional house. Each track has its own instrumental flavour, track two has some stunningly well spun in guitar samples, and there is some great Hammond, trumpet and flute as the album progresses. The majority of instrumentation here is played live, the sample clearance list is really small. On the whole this album works really well, and the more adventurous tracks are stunning. Good call.

Tony.

If you like "Tourist" have a crack at the '95 album called "Boulevard". It's much more dance than jazz but the first track "deep in it" has that signature Rhodes piano and thumping bass.

Have to confess to using "Pont des Arts" on "Tourist" as a test disc at the last couple of hi-fi shows. Had the Dynaudio room (CDS II / 52 / NAP500 into Contour 3.3) rocking in Bristol earlier this year.

Some of the tracks on these discs have my Dynaudio Contour 1.8 cones smacking the end stops and get the 135 fans whirring nicely.

Enjoy!

Yeah, excellent advice. My brother (who has never seen the Naim Forum) also urged me to buy it.

It's in the player right now, and won't leave before couple of days or weeks
