Scott Walker "The Drift".

Due to be released next month. I for one am intrigued and excited by the prospect of a new album by Scott Walker, his first since 'Tilt' back in 1995.

I was introduced to Scott Walker by a college friend who would often dig out 'Scott 3' to play as we consumed pizza in a post pub daze! Being essentially a rock music sort of person, I was perplexed by it at first. I didn't understand what he saw in what first appeared to me an embarrassingly cheesy 60's pop anachronism. However, over a period of time I found myself seduced by the classy vibe of it, to the point where I felt I had to buy my own copy.

This all happened three or four years ago and it remains a disc I never tire of, in fact it seems to get better and better with repeat listening - Beautiful melodies, arrangements and lyrics, combined with a compelling melancholic intensity. I've since acquired the rest of his 60's solo albums, along with 1983's 'Climate of Hunter' and 'Tilt', both of which represent a considerably more challenging listen than the earlier albums.

According to the article and interview in this months Wire magazine, the new album continues the musical and lyrical themes of 'Tilt', which suggests it will be a thought provoking listen, but not perhaps an album for the faint hearted!

I'm sure I can't be alone in being intrigued by this charismatic figure, even though his music is far removed from my normal listening habits! Anyone else rubbing their hands together at the prospect of the new release?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Nigel.

Crackin review of the new album in this months Observer Music magazine (if I recall). Scott remains as deep as the Oceans and as cool as hell Eek . I just don't get him, bought Climate of the Hunter (on vinyl)and gave up after a couple of listens.

Maybe i'll try again when I get my turntable sorted.

It'll be good to hear how 'The Drift' feels when you've listened to it for a few weeks.

Enjoy Cool

Best to start with the solo records 'Scott 1-4', everything Nigel Said. Then move on to the later stuff (if you dare). Fascinating interview on Radio 4's 'Front Row' the other night. I was expecting an enigmatic and difficult character. What we got was a relaxed, warm and chatty Scott, happy to discuss the Walker Brothers, as well as the new record. Very different from his bizarre appearance on Later a few years ago to promote 'Tilt'.
