COD being Call of Duty? CoD4 is Modern Warfare, but what is CoD 5 ? World at War ?

For DVD and stuff, have you considered installing Linux? I'm preparing to do that, probably by the end of the month...

It's officially supported by Sony. Also, it allows you to play any imaginable format... FLAC, mkv....

now that would be good news - how or where do you get it. ? scotty

Official info from Sony is here:

http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/index.html

You can find a very decent article on Wikipedia, here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_for_PlayStation_3

along with a list of distributions and link to each.

Personally, I'm waiting to get a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse first, to start - probably a Logitech Cordless MediaBoard Pro:

nkrgovic,

thanks for that but im still a little concerned because linux seems to have got lukewarm feedback on many dedicated ps3 forums stating that the installation of linux has caused compatability issues. think i will wait a little longer and see how things progress as i dont want to f**k up my brand new ps3. let us know how you get on. regards, scotty

Once my PS3 shop gets the keyboard - sure. I've asked about it there too, and was told it's OK by them as well, tough. Also, the PS3 has an option to restore it's original state, that is to "remove" the Linux and format the hard disk, or at least that option is in the menu Smile (haven't tried it).

so what your saying is that by installing linux the ps3 will then play dvds and blu ray discs from all regions. p.s. which version of linux are we supposed to download there seems to be 3 versions. Confused

Not saying, guessing. I'll be saying once I get it installed, and then found some discs to test with. If you wish, wait for a week or two, before I get the time and hardware (the keyboard) to try. Will keep you posted, on this topic, once I do it.

As for the version, any one is OK, you can read about them all. I'll probably try Fedora, but that's me, and I do that for a living Big Grin . Ubuntu is probably the easiest for novice users... if you feel like experimenting.

Get yourself online Scott. However you might find that hours at a time seem to disappear.

ahem! to get back on thread....are there any must have games that you would recommend.
i have COD5 and TIGER WOODS which are both brilliant and have pre ordered GT5 ? i think it is - its the full prologue gran turismo anyways.
i have also pre ordered ALIEN COLONIAL MARINES as i love the Alien films.

I loved Uncharted - Drake's Fortune...

Phil,

I have played a demo of uncharted but i found that the baddies just overun you eventually no matter what you do which overall puts me off the game. i fancy far cry 2 which is in the same vein of game.

scottyhammer: what about The Orange Box (also known as Half Life 2 complete)? I've played quite a few first person shooters and this one is one of the very best, in my opinion.
Posted on: 23 January 2009 by scottyhammer
yes i would agree with that ods - the problem is that i have completed the game on a pc.
cheers anyway.

Scotty,

Exhausted the Playstation Store for demo downloads? The official PS3 mag covermount is packed too.

You could rent first and I really rate Blockbuster's preowned section. You should find GT5 Prologue cheap, you might as well do the licences now. Maybe Midnight Club LA or Burnout Paradise if you fancy an open street racer format or NFS ProStreet which got slated for abandoning it but is still a nice track based racer. For off road ATB racing with airborne tricks try Pure.

Tomb Raider Underworld (Underwired more like) was Drake's with less shooting, demo available. There's a good golf game underpinning Everybody's Golf. Push forward under fire with COD4 (lucky to find one) and MGS4 if you want to lose yourself for a week. Or Fallout 3 for a month if post apocalyptic westerns are your thing (nice racial mix too). Orange Box is great value but a bloody awful port.

The first gaming moment of 2009 for me was Dead Space ending and offering to do it all again with the weapons and pick-ups from the first run, great reward psychology runs right through that game.

I've just installed fallout 3, and played the intro Smile - so, been busy. Anyway, to report, as promised:

I've installed Ubuntu 8.10 after all. Simple, straightforward install, provided you are OK with formating the PS3 drive. You can backup the saved games to the USB stick, so it's not a problem. I choose to dedicate 10GB to the "Other OS", and the rest to PS3.

Once installed, I've connected a network cable to my router, with DHCP and internet works like a charm. Installed mplayer, and a last.fm player form the Ubuntu repositories, both work fine. I can watch a film, mount the drive from my Linux desktop via NFS or SMB, play FLAC's trough Rhytmbox (came pre-installed), and watch divx and DVD's. Most of the stuff works fine.

The only problem I've had is with the Keyboard. I've got the Logitech Cordless MediaBoard Pro, but it will not work.. Some bug in the Bluetooth part of the new Ubuntu, I expect it will be fixed in the 9.04 version. Needed a USB keyboard and mouse to install, but, as far as I understand, nothing stops you guys to get a USB wireless keyboard, and avoid the hassle. Also, once installed, both SSH and VNC work remotely, trough the network.

Haven't tried DVD's for other regions, since I don't have any... Still, anything you can rip to your PC you can stream over the network, so no reason not to work.

interesting - thanks nkrgovic.
