Wilson Audio

Posted by: Kevin-W on 06 August 2003

I was reading a review of this company's new £125,000 speakers (they look bloody 'orrible, by the way) in Hi-Fi News in Smith's the other day while waiting for a heat-delayed train.

Has anyone heard their speakers? I know they do one system, the WAMM, which costs about $500,000. Are they worth the money? I know they do "cheaper" speakers (Sophias?) at around £12,000.

I'm not interested in buying any, just curious if they justify their enormous price tag. And if they sound good.

The bloke in HFN (yes, I know it was Kessler!) seemed to like them.

Cheers

Kevin,

The standard forum reply regarding Wilson is going to be along the lines of..."they are high-priced American crap".., "they do some Hifi things well, but they don't make music".., etc.

I must say, however, that I have listened to an earlier Wilson speaker WATT5/Puppy at a good friends driven by the proverbial "steamin heap-o-Krell". Although a different presentation than Naim speakers, I really enjoy listening to this set-up, and find that it certainly makes music.

In fact, these speakers have pushed to me to what may be the middle ground in speakers, Audio Physic, and I plan to replace my speakers with AP Virgo III's in the near future.

Hi,

I heard the sofias with a CDS2/52/500 and I did not think they were worth the money, although they were certainly capable of producing a lot of bass. They lacked focus in the midrange and had a kind of plucky and compressed trebble. Tracey Chapman's mouth seemed like it was fifteen feet wide and the guitars seemed to come from all over the room. One day earlier I heard a nottingham TT with chord electronics and Wilson benesch Chimeras and the sound was far more dynamic, clear, natural, and focussed, but most of all incredibly engaging. And this is with Chord electronics, which many naim owners find rather cold and overly neutral.

But the sofias may be to some tastes. I would describe them as sounding a lot like a high end boom box in their presentation.

I've heard the WATT/Puppies a few times at the end of Levinson/Orbe or Levinson/Levinson/Levinson - cold, clinical, didn't feel like I was hearing music, but excellent hifi.

I have heard a few versions of the Watt Puppy and always been underwhelmed by the sound quality.
I believe that the loudspeaker is too well controlled and as a result sounds dull as ditch water with poor dynamics and a very tilored frquency balance. Not my cup of tea.

One year at the hifi show Mr Franasovichi was playing the system so hard that the decorative plants were being blown to hell by the port output. The sound was KRAPP.

My favourite Wilson was commercially unsuccessful, the Witt. So what do i know.

I hace built a WATT PUPPY copy using Focal drive units and i much prefer thesound. The xover is much more simple and thus buggersup the sound less. They are very fast and dynamic with wonderful bass extension and superb mid. I like Focal units.

Hey DAVOhorn

I thought the new KRAPP was a Linn speaker. Or was that the new Krudd?

To go with the Klunk & Klik pre/power combo?
(Maybe there should be a Linn names thread...?)

I have heard one truly excellent demo of Watt/Puppy (or may have been early system V). At the time this was the best I'd ever heard, and with the Krell amps was about twice the value of my six-pack + briks. Something of a surprise, and I know two people who agreed with me.

I have never heard anything but a pile of poo from any (genuine) Wilson speaker since.

52/500/NBL beats it at it's own game, though.

cheers, Martin
