Royd loudspeakers are very fast and musical. Ideally suited to Naim..
Not without the occasional rough edge tho. If you want smoothness over everything else probably look elsewhere. If you want snap, timing and great boogie factor then you can do far worse than a pr of Doublets...or Minstrels or Abbots...
I'm currently using Minstrels on a 72/180 combo and am not bored one bit. The other plus is you should be able to pick up a pair 2nd hand for sod all money.

I'd disagree slightly with redeye's comment on the rough edges, my brother uses doublets with a NAP160 and it's one of the most refined sounds I've heard.
They are fast, produce deep tuneful bass, and are physically very heavy to lift. The two criticisms are cabinet finish and power handling - the simple crossover used places restrictions on ultimate power handling.
Bear in mind these are obsolete speakers - don't pay too much. They can be had s/h at very good prices. If you can get some very late ones (as my brother has) they have the newer drive units, used in the newer, more expensive, range of 'speakers.
I'd recommend them highly - the treble end makes my Kans sound rough in comprison - new Linn tweeters to come soon!

Are the drivers in late period Doublets the same as those used in the RR2???

redeye,
Yes, as I understand it they are, very few were made in this form though.

I have a pair and love 'em. Got mine from Derek Whitington at New Audio Frontiers - I spoke to him recently and he bought all the remaining stock so you should be able to get some brand new ones.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Paul.
John
Proud owner of the last pair of Doublets to leave Mr Ackroyd's hands.I wonder if I've got those RR2 drivers as well?

If you can get a demo of any used Royd Abbots then do so, I use these with my Naim system and they are just superb....
