DBL's and CRT
Posted by: Henners on 18 November 2007
This is a bit of a fact finder as I'm in the middle of upgrading my Hifi and it involves moving the telly(good technical stuff as you can "tell") to a position inbetween the speakers.
I am auditioning a pair of DBL's in the near future and if I like them I will have to rearrange my room to suit.
Currently I have a pair on Glastonburies one of which is positioned up against an aged Sony 32"crt. There is no picture damage as the Glastos are made of metal and the magnets do not have any external effect of the TV.
To accommodate the DBL's I will have to move the TV between the speakers, there will be room for a 4ft (minimum) gap between them, possibly more as the wall in 12ft and I havent decided where to move the hifi to yet.
My questions relate to the effect the speakers will have on the crt.
1) do you think the DBLs will affect the TV Picture
2)if they do will they effect an LCD or plasma screen if I have to but a replacement?
3) If I have to buy a replacement what should I get to connect the new TV to the rest of the hifi. Im not interested in surround sound at the moment so will be using the DBL's as a 2 channel speaker system - rest of hifi is CDS3/555ps+552+500. Would I be better getting a Naim DVD player to run though the hifi, rather than an NVi.
As you can tell I'm ok with Hifi, but not very compus mentis when it comes to TV's etc. so any helpful suggestions would be gratfully received.
Thanks in anticipation

Thanks Munch
I had a feeling that might be the case, that makes life a little easier in that I can accommodate my Hifi and TV boxes in the same space below the screen.
Thanks

Hang on - did you say a 4ft gap between the speakers or a 4ft gap between each speaker and TV??? I thought you said 4ft between the speakers which would put a 32" telly about 6 inches from each DBL. I would want 1ft from the speaker if possible. The speakers are wide so that means there would be quite a way between the main drive unit's magnet assembly and the TV.
If you do get colour bleed your only solution is to have a flat panel. These are not affected by speakers. If it's 32" then you're looking at LCD technology since the smallest plasmas are 37". Panasonic make a good 37" plasma, although no patch on the 42" Pioneer 428. The Pioneers are really excellent TVs, although they come at a premium price.
If you're not interested in surround sound, why consider a surround sound system in the form of an n-Vi? On the other hand, the n-Vi and DVD5 have excellent pictures and very good sound too. The nice thing about the n-Vi is that should you wish to add centre speaker and/or rears/sub (!) you can do so at any time you wish. Adding a centre speaker is usually very desirable since this is the most important speaker in the DVD mix. That said, you can have very good results from a purely 2-channel solution. In this case, it is more important to go for as good a DVD player as makes sense to you since the DVD player is working hard to downmix the audio off the disc and meld it into a coherent whole.
As to whether you should go n-Vi or DVD5, this depends on you and the display you choose. The n-Vi has close performance tot he DVD5 which can be wiped out by less satisfactory displays.

But if you get the DBLs you dont want a bloody great Sony tv stuck in the middle of them.
It will mash the sound up.
I have a plasma between my SBLs on the wall but it is above the speakers so it does not mess with the sound.
This would be the way for you to go if you must have it on the same wall as your DBLs.
If you dont want surround sound you wont need a n/vi.I would just get a good dvd player and put it through you NAC and NAP 500.There is a good player on the market now for around £500 that plays both formats blueray and HD discs.I would go for one of these.
Hope this helps Munch
Munch,
Have to disagree about a cheap DVD player - processor maybe, but not the source. The only issue I have with my HT setup is that due to the almost dire sound of my Sony dvd player (HDD recorder/player) I do not really enjoy or even bother to listen to music dvd's. Movies are fine tho.

Sorry for the delay I have just got back in.
I have a 12ft wall against which I can have 2 X 2ft speakers and gap for the TV. My question was based around wanting to maintain the stereo and not have a surround sound system.
I assume that the crt will suffer from "colour bleed" as the magnets from the 15" speakers are not screened. Unlike in the Glastonburies.
If I get a lcd/plasma I can get a decent stand to go in between the speakers to support both Hifi and tv kit (dvd and sky box). Im not looking for anything dramatic in terms of picture quality yet. Just to get the room right around the Hifi. My worry is that I will have difficulty getting it all right and a stand for the Hifi that does it justice. fraim will be out of the question.
Maybe this is one upgrade too far.
Best Regards
