Steely Dan vinyl availability?
Posted by: Chris M on 15 April 2005
Dear all,
having just had my LP12 serviced and finally made the move to a MC cartridge,I have been rediscovering the pleasures of vinyl! Can anyone inform me of the current situation regarding Steely Dan LPs. Today I bought a copy of "Everything Must Go", but that was all I could find localy (Nottingham). Can "Gaucho" and "Two Against The World" be obtained? Allso my original 70s back catalogue is fairly well hammered, are these available? many thanks,
Chris M

Chris. Firstly you are posting music questions inthe hifi section, so might be better placed in the relevent 'room'
But onto your actual question.
This depends, if you are after brand new vinyl. Well good luck you are basically listening to 'has been music' Sorry to be blunt but its true and as such new vinyl will be scarse, however check out ebay as they have many tonnes of this type of music.

You local second hand record emporium might (or might not) be a good place to start.
I found both albums in charity shops for small change. They wouldn't take the extra money I offered because of their desirability and rarity value.

There are these sources that aren't eBay, or HMV etc....

Find Gaucho if at all possible, it is amazing in vinyl. I've had my copy since it was released and it is delicious!
The story I remember about the recording of that was they tried digital (for an analog release of course since CDs were not yet commercially available) but didn't like it so they did it all in analog. This was early '80s and digital was relatively new.

Thanks very much for the info.
Julian, the links were very useful, particularly the one with the Japanese vinyl
titles.
NainDropper, I will certainly search out a vinyl copy of "Gaucho", it sounds amazing!
I must admit that the vinyl copy of "Everything Must Go" that I found has a rather clinical, digital feel to it. Having recently made several improvements in my system,I am amazed at the quality of the seventies recordings, there's loads of stuff going off in their that I hadn't ever heard before!
