New Intro 2's or s/h Credos?? Upgrade advice needed

Posted by: Engelbert on 10 June 2003

My system is CDX2, 150/112/HiCap2, Royd Minstrels, FRAIM, dedicated mains/spur. I have been thinking of upgrading the Minstrels by purchasing new Intro 2 speakers, but the opportunity has just arisen to buy second hand Credos in, I assume, very good order - of course, I will have them thoroughly checked.

I'm not sure what to do? Will my electronics drive Credos satisfactorily? Even if they would drive them OK, would Intro 2's offer better balance in my system. I've always bought brand new in the past, as that has been my preference but, assuming the Credos are competitive in price with new Intro 2's (and in very good order), would the Credos be a better bet?

Would much appreciate any comments.

Cheers from Wellington, New Zealand,

Rob Bowie

If they are in good shape, get the Credos. They have better drivers than the Intro II's. There may be other differences as well. The Credos are an excellent match for your system. I would recommend that you listen to them with your kit if possable.I have not heard Royds but it is a good bet that they sound different than the Credos. Best to be sure that the new speakers give you what you are looking for. Good Luck!

Hi from across town Rob,

I second and third that.

I wonder if they are my old pair?

Could very well be. If they are, can I have the large sum of cash I was storing in one of them?

Many thanks,

Jonny.

Hi there,

I demo'd intro2's when I was buying my current CD5/Nait5/FC2 & felt they souded good & very very good vfm compared to other speakers listened to in the demo.

However, the only criticism I had was that they were a 'little rough around the edges' -slightly course treble & slightly loose bass. When I mentioned this to the sales guy (who I know quite well) he said "Hmm, tis a shame Naim don't make Credo's anymore because from what you descibe, you would like them".

So I then tracked down a mint s/h pair of Credo's & am very happy with them. -Although they look identical to the Intro2's, they have quite a few differences -metal drive unit surrounds instead of plastic, real wood veneer cabinet instead of vinyl coated + extra internal cabinet bracing -generally higher spec materials -I think the new price was around £1350 which is nearly double the price of a new pair of intro's.

However, the sensitivity is the same as the intro's so they are easy to drive.

I pretty much agree with Percy. Get the Credos.

They're a versatile design with a higher power handling capacity than Intros and they run fine on anything from a Nait to 135's. They don't go DBL low but they do do the Naim thing very well, if that's important to you.

If they've not been neglected or abused and the Paxos are in good order I'd plump for 2nd hand Credos over new Intros anytime.

Did the same a few months ago..Minstrels to Credos. Not as cut and dried as it may appear although Credos can be made to sound quite good with painstaking set-up.

One thing for sure is that Credos do not sound like Royds. Not even close. If you like the Royd sound have you considered the RR2??
