Listening in surgery
Posted by: Rockingdoc on 24 February 2004
With the increasing amount of paperwork that is the lot of a GP these days, I find myself sitting at my desk for hours a day. I've been listening to music using a CD walkman and Etymotic earphones, and it is pretty good.
It is time to upgrade!
Any suggestions? A CDS3 through a 552 and Headline and Supercap seems a bit excessive, so any sensible advice welcome. Doesn't have to be Naim.
It doesn't have to be portable, but should be discrete. Headphones only as I mustn't disturb the neighbouring rooms which might contain sick people.

Your headphones are excellent if you are trying to block out the sound of your surroundings. If you have a PC try iTunes and an iPod. Nothing like having a FEW THOUSAND songs at your disposal! (including all those reccomended here).

Sorry to mention the "Linn" word here but how about the Linn Classik Music? It's a small, single unit that has a quality cd player, radio, clock, amp (if you want to power speakers one day), and headphone socket. It also acts as preamp or integrated amp so you can plug other components into it. I listened to it a few years ago (with speakers, not with earphones) and was impressed.
Not as small and nifty as an iPod though.

Look on Ebay for an NEC external SCSI CD-ROM drive.
I got one for $9 - it has external RCA sockets and a coaxial digital out for an off board DAC.
Plugged this into a $90 battery powered headphone amp found on www.headfi.com into my old Sennhieser HD545's
Cracking sound for little $$$

I was just in Radio Shack and saw a very small intgrated amp, very discrete, about 6 inches wide. Paired with their CyberHome DVD/cd player (which I bought, 9x9x1.5 inches) such a deal. Wonder if they'd have a tuner for it and probably has headphone jacks. Check it out, small enough to put on a corner of your desk. or bookshelf behind you. I realize with your income cost is no object, but space is a problem and they are the smallest I've ever seen. Other option is going for a Nakamichi player that you can mount on the wall. Competing with B&O for design as art.

Much amused by the music advice, but looking at the gear again; what I want is best quality sound. iPods and MP3 isn't good enough. I've tried the computer sound-card route but my Sony CD-walkman D-EJ825 easily outperforms it. I am looking for a stand alone CD player with a good enough amp to drive high sensitivity earphones well.
UFO's "Doctor Doctor" is my personal fave.

Thanks Wolf, the Nak Soundspace 1 appears to be just the thing, but it seems to come complete with speakers (which I don't really want to pay for). Also not sure about Nakamichi availability in the UK anymore.
I have an old Marantz CD63 sig. which has a headphone socket, but I honestly think the walkman sounds better. Possibly because its primary function is to drive headphones, unlike the Marantz deck.
O.K. done a search and found the Soundspace 1 in UK for 480 GBP. Looks like current front runner. Any more suggestions?

Linn Classik second hand??
Never heard one and I don't rate Linn personally, but it might be the ticket (and it's small).

I've just bought a new Linn Clasik for a 2nd/3rd system and put it with a pair of Linn Kan II's, sounds good enough for what I want.

At work I used a Nakamichi CR-2 cassette deck that had a headphone jack and volume control with a pair of Grado SR60 headphones. This setup sounded every bit as good as my main system at home with tapes made from my main source.

I also have HD600s, but the Etymotics blow them into the weeds. The Etymotics have the advantage of;
much better bass
much better dynamics
exclusion of external noise
no annoying tizz for the neighbours
easily driven to brain crushing levels by any portable device

Any suggestions? A CDS3 through a 552 and Headline and Supercap seems a bit excessive, so any sensible advice welcome. Doesn't have to be Naim.
It doesn't have to be portable, but should be discrete. Headphones only as I mustn't disturb the neighbouring rooms which might contain sick people.

If the above is indeed too much, go "half way" (...you save yourself this little expense of an 552 & headline...!!)
CDS 3 directly connected to a STAX Omega head-set with its own driver /amplifier - the absolute ultimate in headphone listening !!
(it doesn't have the sound insulation of a closed phone and does "radiate" some sound to the out-side, though)
Regards & Have fun !

In my bulging hi-fi cupboard, I also have a pair of Stax Lambda Pros with a strange Stax "energiser" (can't remember the number) which connects to the power-amp speaker terminals. These have never been a success, which may well be due to the energiser, but I'm reluctant to invest in Stax again.
