Help with system setup

Posted by: Sundance on 14 January 2004

Hello again,

I have now set-up my 72/140 with CD3.5 and although it sounds superb compared with what I had, I seem to have alot of hiss coming from the speakers... any clues?

Is the hiss audible from your normal listening position?

Yes it is really.

What distance are you from the speakers?

It's still vaguely audible 9 feet away

A certain amount of hiss is perfectly normal, but I'm surprised you can hear it from 9ft away. I have a 72/HiCap/90 and when I first used it I noticed hiss but after a few weeks it went away.

P.S.
Start saving for a HiCap, you will not believe the difference it makes.

How high is the volume control set? Do you hear the hiss through loud music? soft music? no music? What speakers do you have?

I would not be surprised if you hear hiss with very sensitive speakers (Klipsch, for example) - loud music with the volume control set very low. Nor would I be surprised if you hear hiss with the VC set very high.

I normally listen to CDs and FM with the VC set at about 8 o'clock and to LPs with the VC set at 10-11. I sit maybe 7 feet away from my 90dB/1 watt/1 meter speakers, and I've never heard hiss from my 140 or 250 in 12 years of listening to Naim equipment.

If your speakers are not very sensitive, then perhaps the 72 or 140 need service. If service is needed, a hicap won't help with the hiss. A hicap will help with everything else, of course.

Regards.

Hi,

I also have the 72/140 combo and can now only hear the hiss when I get within about a metre.

However. Last June I moved house and when I first set the system up in the new house the hiss was really bad. I eventually traced the problem to bad connection(s) on the interconnect and remedied it by plugging the SNAIC in and out a few (quite a few actually) times. Contact cleaner would have been easier but I did could not find my can of this at the time.

Dirty connections could be an issue whether the kit has been in store or in constant use prior to your getting it.

Thanks for all responses.

The hiss is audible with zero volume. The speakers are old Celestion Ditton 44s and the weakest link I feel in my new system. I was planning to buy a HiCap this week, but I think the speakers need to go first! So Saturday I go to dem B&W, Neat, Ruark.

Could be right about the connections - will try your advice Steve.

IMO, hiss being audible at 0 volume points toward SNAIC or 140.

I really think you should consult with Naim or a good dealer on this. And see if you can get some time with your preamp and a hicap. The hicap is really good with a 72, essential IMO. You may very well get the improvement you want from the hicap more easily than from new speakers.

But the hiss sounds like a malfunction....

Best of luck.

This is normal in a quiet room.
