Don't have a Naim player but I have two Meridian 200 Transports, one with a Trichord Clock.

The Trichord clock unit just seems that much more precise than the other unit, difficult to put into words. It doesn't appear to be a huge upgrade but is an upgrade never the less!!

Don't know how much difference it would make to a Naim player as I don't know how good their clocks are in the first place.

Mr Perceptive

PS I wouldn't have thought that there would be much price difference between the Trichord mod and a s/h CDX (assuming you could get decent money for your CD5). I doubt that the Trichord mod on the CD5 would increase its value. If your goal is higher up the Naim ladder, then I would save your money until you could get a CDX.

A good clock mod will make a big difference to a player at this level, the Naim clock is a simple (but well-implemented) standard osc. circuit, based on a crystal and a 74HCU04 (as are most cheap CDP's).

It think this is good advice - the CD5 will be improved greatly, but will lose value as a result. It will be cheaper than a s/h CDX, unless you get an unusually good deal on the CD5, but it is more of a dead-end.

If you have desires for the CDX and above, then save your pennies, if not, then I'd consider it. The modded CD5, will not be a limiting factor for some years to come (you do have an external PSU, I assume?).

Will it sound like a better Naim at the end???

Well my Meridian 200/203 sounds like a better 200/203 with the Trichord Clock mod. Don't know if that really helps though.

Trichord have modified Naim players before, according to their web sites.

There was an interesting product recently on eBay made by Sonic Frontiers which was a reclocker. No use to you Naim boys as you have no digital out, but essentially it sat between the Transport and the DAC and took the the signal in, and reclocked it with a clock of similar accuray to the Trichord clock. It went for just over £200 (£1500 new apparently).

Having decided to stay with the Meridian CDP route, I'm very pleased with the Trichord variant, and I feel that its probably as detailed as a CDX but the presentation is different, as I've said on ther threads you are in row 3 rather than in the front row. It is very controlled and a significant leap above a CD3.5. We tested 3.5/CDX/200-203 in the same system. Never heard a CD5 though.

Yes!

It does nothing to change the fundamental sound, it simply becomes more musically engaging and with immediately better bass, that's reflected throughout the spectrum upon closer listening.

The low-level resolution increases too.

I have a clock from LC Audio in my old Arcam CDplayer and it really improved the sound. Maybe a good clock can be compared to adding a psu to a tt or buying a better tt. It doesn't change the sonic signature (at least not in my CDplayer) but it improves timing and coherence as well as giving a big improvement in the bass, making it firmer and better defined. A good upgrade IMO if funds are limited and your CDplayer is a good one.

I also have a LC Clock updated cdplayer.

For me it definitely cleaned up things a bit. Esp. the midrange became more clear. My cdp is a Marantz CD16, to compare to the Naims it's at least (IMHO) equal to Naim 3.5.

I don't know how good the clocks are in the entry Naim cdp's, but I would expect that they could be bettered by a specialized product like Trichord or LC Audio.

LC Audio XO clock (around £ 40) is a cheap upgrade to most cdp's I guess.
