PC issue - sound has gone...

Not that its used for music, but I've downloded SP3 which has removed the driver. Is it safe to go back to a restore point or is there a simple way for a thicko to install a new driver?

TIA

A similar thing happened to me a month ago. I ended up going to downloads.com for the appropriate driver. That was far easier than going to the manufacturer's site!

Turns out ( I think ... ) I need a yamaha yst-ms201 driver. Any ideas where I can download one? I'm loath to have to spend to repair an error seemingly caused by Microsoft...

SP3 also did the same to my son's PC and then caused it and my own laptop's XP OS to self destruct. Would they take responsibility? No.

From what i've read SP3 is a complete load of **** and MS even put out a patch to stop you downloading it if you didnt want to.
The first thing it did was delete ALL restore points up to the point of it's install, then set a new one at it's install point. Clever that eh..

SP3 = Service Pack 3, Windows update, and like most Windows updates can be summarised by don't fix something that isn't boken.

I accidentally switched on Automatic Updates a couple of months ago, and it tried to add all the updates, and advised me to add SP3. I stopped it before it got too far, but the first thing it did was delete the graphics for System Restore. Fortunately it hadn't got as far as deleting the restore points themselves, and I copied the missing graphics file from my other computer and then managed to run System Restore.

Windows did manage to run its disc repair on the other computer, I hit the space bar a second too late to stop it, and it managed to delete the file system in that time. Microsoft should owe me 80gig of lost data, thankfully a lot of it was duplicated on the other computer.

Sadly it is more convenient to use Windows on my PCs, but for work UNIX/IRIX is what I use, I wouldn't trust Windows to let me get a job finished.

I still like a quote a friend wrote in a magazine a few years ago 'Running on Windows is like installing a virus on your computer'.

A Service Pack is a lot more major than regular updates, you have to go and download, and run it. Read up about it before running it, there will be some comments on the web if you do a Google search.

Personally I have both Automatic Updates, and the Windows Firewall switched off, but it isn't something I would recommend to people unless they are confident about managing their computer.

Eve with that set twice this year Windows has managed to catch me out by prompting things that look like other programmes or just doing things on restart without requiring my permission first.

I've had SP3 installed since it was released without a hitch.

Bill Thompson makes some good points and I can't help wonder why if you are capable of identifying the driver that you need that you are not capable of finding the download.

The link had nothing to do with my query, complete waste of time.

I've found a driver for the sound card but acnnot install it. As mentioned I cannot bring myself to shell out for a Microsoft error if it can be fixed for nothing.

@ Avole - thank you.

Don't think you'll find or need a driver as the Yamaha YST-MS201s are speakers.

I suspect it's the sound card for which you need the drivers. Find out the manufacturer and go to their website - usually the drivers are under something like support/downloads.

Before you do that, though, go into Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices and check the settings there.

I went to the sound card manufacturer and it was impossible to download their driver. On my geeky brother's advice I want to downloads.com, hey presto, free driver, quick and easy download, problem sorted.
