should I buy a cd player or move to SACD - once I'd listened to a CD5 it was a no-brainer.

How much music is currently available on SACD - very little, how much on CD - what isn't?

If you can find an SACD player that sounds as good as the CD5 for CD's then go ahead and buy it. But how long were CDs around before decent players emerged on the market?

CDs will be around for a few years yet, look how many people on the forum still buy vinyl (myself included)

Go for a record deck. I've compared CD, DVD-A, SACD, LP in the same setup at the same session, and LP was still streets ahead of DVD-A and SACD.

That convinced me to go analogue. Also there seems to have been a resurgence in the availability of vinyl. HMV is offering more of the black-stuff, and Simply Vinyl are re-issuing many of the classic contemporary music.

Buy the strongest source you can afford. IMHO to buy a less capable source in the hope that another technology might prosper in the format wars is a non-starter; I know a guy who refused to shell out on a decent CD player nearly four years ago, citing the same argument (oh DVD-blah ... and today his system is still hamstrung by a Marantz CD63KI Sig. You could be listening to a source that provides much less enjoyment fo some years by following the same argument. If you buy something that plays great music now, there's a good chance you'll only be driven to buy a better source later (whatever the format) when you can clearly hear that something is genuinely better, and afford it.

Sony are likely asking the same questions - "what will the market do?". Some thoughts...
  • For the moment at least, there are still very few titles available.
  • There are still households that do not have CD - let alone another format.
  • There are also users who have over the years bought Hotel California on Vinyl, 8-Track, Cassette, CD - it's unlikely they'll adopt freely another format, particularly on technical merit.

Note that I haven't touched on the question of which format is better - this is largely irrelevant. If in doubt, refer to the Betamax vs VHS argument.

I expect CD to be around for many years yet. I suggest you choose your source only with your ears.
