Locking of threads

Posted by: Steve Toy on 07 February 2006

Is it necessary to do so in the complete absence of flaming or abuse from/to other posters?

Mods may get bored and it's their ball etc...

Dear Steve,

I sometimes think that Threads are rightly enough closed, on occasion. Sometimes it becomes much less innocuous than its start...

All the best to you from Fredrik

My SME 20 thread got locked.

I think it crossed the "terminally boring" threshold Big Grin

Without the trigger-happy one, all innocuous threads will die a natural death anyway, eventually.

Most threads that get locked are either started by B. Fritz (who was limited in how many posts he could have going at once) or of a specific, limited interest between two members - "Hi, Steve could you e-mail me?".

There appear to be a variety of subjects which can be relied on to bring out the worst in some members – occasional flurries of personal animus between members – neither of which has any place here and will be removed/closed.

Yes sometimes it is necessary and its down to the Moderator to decide when the time is right.

More often than not someone is going to be agreived at a thread being closed but in the majority of cases it is the correct descision.

Its not easy being a mod.

Different topic but a moan all the same. Why can't we edit posts anymore?
Posted on: 08 February 2006 by Polarbear
We can!

My query was with specific reference to the locking of the speeding on the M4 thread even if this was not stated above.

Ironically, Fritz did start this thread but his input thereafter was zero. To have locked the thread for any of the following reasons:

a) it was a long thread

b) one started by Fritz

c) was recently resurrected

would be a poor excuse indeed. The thread was rightfully resurrected in light of more recent events pertaining to the discussion therein.

No we can't. Confused

I'd like to suggest to Mods that when they lock a thread they have the last word along the lines of

I've decided to lock this thread because:

1) I can

2) see 1 above.

Dear Steve,

Your post above is absolutely right, and it is absolutley right that the situation is as you see it! It is Naim's Forum. They pay for it. The employ staff who have to spend time watching this. It is no democrasy. How could it be? Therefore the Moderators will occasionally make decision that anyone one of us (as individuals) might disagree with, and yes it it 'because they can,' but maybe it would be well to ask why in this particular case. There is usually a reason, and in the case of the M4 Thread you have been given it. All of B Fritz's Threads except one have been shut, for reasons... Well lets actually not go there, so the decision to scale down his Threads has a reason even if it appears arbitary to you. The soloution is to start a new Thread on the subject of the M4, as this intrests you, and we know that the problem was not the content of it as such, but the fact that it was one of B Fritz's Threads.

Only a thought. Fredrik

PS: My view actually is it might be a good thing if the only person who posted on B Fritz's Thread of the day was B himeslf. Then maybe he would go elsewhere and find some other collection of 'mates.' Beware of him he has an insidious way of chummying up and then when you are not expecting it, he attacks one in the a way so obscure but stll rather unpleasant, as to be both vexing and perplexing...

It would be more pleasant for all concerned if Adam would simply extradite BF (initials remind anyone of anything?) to a universe far, far away.

But, failing that, Fredrik is right. If everyone ignores him (by which I mean not even opening his threads), he'll eventually go away.

Amen. I have been as guilty as any in encouraging the poor sod.

Locking the original M4 thread because it was originally started by Fritz is the flimsiest of flimsy pretexts.

As I said, Fritz only started it and hasn't been seen on it since.

You won't let it rest - will you?

Adam,

You ought to lock this thread!

If the above is directed at me, then yes I will.

With the greatest respect I'll only raise issues with any perceived lack of even-handedness and I'll accept specific explanations made at the time for mod decisions with good grace.

Mutual respect is the key here I think.
