Still on the Lech.

After an hour of truly depressing WW2 Behind Closed Doors [BBC iPlayer], it seems that the history we were taught at school was not quite adequate.

Of course a reading of Churchill's own History of WW2 would show that the conventional wisdom was somewhat filleted, but this new programme [part five may be viewed on Monday at 9 pm on BBC TV 2] may show the desperation of the situation where to some extent one may see that winning against the Nazis really required the shackling of the Polish Nation to a Soviet Dictatorship no less horrible than the preceeding Nazi one.

Though Churchill made some horrifying conscessions over Poland it is hard to see what option he had.

It has been my experience of the Polish that almost all see this as being the truth, even if not one likes it. Some see it as betrayal, which it is impossible to argue against ...

Monte Casino, where my eldest Uncle, George, comanded a group of Gurkas, fought alongside the majority of Poles under General Anders, who eventually overcame the Germans. I know this from familly witness. Those Poles fought with a bravery that was actually not normal. My uncle commented that it was a good job they were on our side ...

And while this was happening Stalin's Red Army sat in Praga [eastern suberb of Warsaw, east of the Wisla] while civilians and irregulars called the Home Army, fought the German army and were deafeated - 200,000 and more civilians died. And the Reds then moved into a ghost city of wrecked buildings and corposes. Their reluctant aid too little and too late. They knew that the Nazis would destroy the city as they did with dynamite, block by bloke, and move in and "help the Poles" by erecting a new capitol city suitable for their illegal puppet government.

Thus the Poles only really saw the end of the hostilities that started in September 1939 [when both German and soviet Armies invaded] with the colapse of the Communist government of Gen Jaruselski a good half century after the suffering would end for the UK and the USA.

It surprises me still that the Poles have the perspective to still see Britain as a great friend to them.

Bit serious, but please watch this programme.

After re-arranging my CD collection all day long this is just what the doctor ordered. I was disciplined enough to wait until after I'm done, otherwise some titles might have disappeared forever. Winker
