upgrading path for my system?
Posted by: Tennispro on 22 April 2003
I would like to get the opinions of the educated people here about the upgrade path for my system. I have a AV2, Nap 150, Nap 175, CD5 w/hicap and a pioneer elite47a DVD player. I am most interested in upgrade for 2 channel sound. If I am going to upgrade one piece at a time would I be better off upgrading to a CDX2 or upgrading to a 202 preamp with its power supply and ulitmately a hicap, or should I go with the power first up to a 200 now or a 250 later? Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

Naim advice here would dictate that you get a cdx2. However, with the AV2 as a source, I dont feel that it will do the cdx2 justice. Your preamp will be a serious limiting factor.
This thread should help answer your questions.

It is an excellent upgrade thread.
I would recommend that you get a 202/200 for your system and use the hicap on your 202. It will present a balanced sound. After that, get a cdx2 and ultimately 282 (252 even better).
The cdx2 costs roughly as much as a 202/200 and in the end, the cd5/202/200/hicap will present you with a very balanced sound.
You may consider installing a dedicated outlet as well. A huge help.
There is a used cdx2 for sale for 4k and a used 202/200 on audiogon.com and the cdx2 has been on ebay as well. Many upgrade options for you.

achandoke,
You have hit the nail on the head. Do I go for the CDX2 or the 202/200 combo. I am leaning toward the 202 pre with the napsc and adding a hicap. I am not clear if I want to upgrade to 200 from the 150. The dealers I have talked to will advise the CDX2 upgrade so that will make me second guess myself!!!

Tennispro,
Use the 202/200. Use your current hicap on the 202. Read the thread I sent you. It was one of the best I have read on this forum.
The cd5 in itself is amazing. The cdx2 is clearly amazing, but with an AV2, you are selling yourself short as you will have a very unbalanced and top heavy system. If you plan on getting a new preamp in the near future, the cdx2 is a very viable upgrade.
I fear that the cdx2 will be stiffled with an AV2 which is comparable to an unpowered 112.
Just my two cents

achandoke,
Ok so you believe that I should clearly go for the 202 and put the hicap on it like the thread suggested. Do you think that the 200 would be a good upgrade? It would be about $1000.00 difference.
Also how do you think a new 202 compares with a older 82 (it may not be old in age) pre.

I believe the 202/200 would be a signifcant upgrade to a AV2/150. The 200 is far superior to the 150. I believe that you would benefit from a balanced system (sistem?). After getting a 202/200, get a cdx2. I know some would advocate a cdx2, but its not a balanced sound. I think you will be most happy with a 202/200.
I have owned a cd5, I traded up to a cdx2. I used a 112 before I got my 202, and the difference between the 112 and 202 is huge. Adding a hicap to the 202 then made a substantial difference as well.
It seems to me that the preamp is far more important than recognized. If I were you, I would get a 202/200. The 202/200 will put a smile on your face, and then get the cdx2. With a 202/200 you can appreciate the excellence of a cdx2.

I hsvent heard the 82 in some time, so I cannot comment on it and the differences with a 202.

Achandoke,

Achandoke,
Thanks for your input! I was just trying to straighten out who was who and now I know. I am leaning toward the 202/200 combo and maybe getting a cdx instead of CD5/hicap and moving the hicap over to the 202. What do you think.

Its cool. I got an email from a fellow named Alex and he and I share a lot in common. I will go talk to him when he comes to Indy. \
Anyway, if I were you, I would get a 202/200 and put your hicap on the 202.
Enjoy your cd5, its an amazing player.

Good move, but don't forget the XPS2 for your cdx. This is going to make the biggest improvement.
