Johnny Cash
Posted by: GML on 28 February 2004
I intend to purchase a Johnny Cash CD. I'm not a huge fan of "Greatest Hits" albums. I seem to recall that someone mentioned a particularly good album by Cash on the forum not so long ago but I can't track it down. I appreciate that fans will have their own favourites and opinion will be divided but what is considered to be a really great album. Thanks.

The most famous of all is called At Folsom Prison. Otherwise, I read several excellent reviews on this box called Unearthed.
Read all about it here.

Did anyone see that fantastic documentary on BBC 1 on Friday night?
Absolutely stunning, and very moving to boot.

GML,
His album in 2002, American IV - Man Comes Around, is very good. It includes the track Hurt, which is already a classic. It has so much emotion, your speakers will cry.
If you have a deck, buy it on vinyl as it's one of the best pressings I bought last last.

Many thanks for your replies.
I also saw the documentary, it was excellent - should have taped it.

Bugger, missed it.
One of the All Time Great Song Lines:
MY NAME IS SUE!! HOW DO YOU DO!!! ( it misses something out of context.. )
His last video is really moving. It shows him ageing, with his wife by his side over many years. Real tear jerker.

Any ideas what the best price on the Unearthed box set is (UK)? For a four (five?) cd box it seems pricy most places - ~£70? - and I wondered why.
btw. All the American series recording (I to IV) are worth having - my favourite being the first side of American III - Solitary Man.

GML.
I've just started buying a bit of Johny Cash.
The At Folsum Prison set was my first purchase and this is really good, this can be found cheap (£4.99) either online or places like MusicZone.
However it's my second purchase that has really impressed me. this is American recordings 2 - Unchained. This is one of the series (All of which are well respected) from the mid nineties.
I've just ordered the first of these 'American Recordings' from here play.com for 6.99. HMV are selling Americal Recordings 1 to 3 for 7.99

Thanks Greeny,
I've just ordered Man Comes Around from Djangos site in USA. I always find that US manufactured CD's have better sound quality than the EU ones. Even with shipping costs they still work out cheaper than most UK sites. I usually order them one at a time to avoid import charges and of course with the current exchange rate prices are very favourable. HMV are hideously overpriced on many albums.
I wasn't aware of the 'American Recordings', will have to check them out.

5 months ago I bought American IV - Man Comes Around after hearing a few tracks played in record shops - it is excellent.
I've since bought American I, II & III and my preference is newest back to oldest. It's worth buying American III just for the track 'After the Darkness' in my view. I&II show their country roots more than III & IV but are still pretty good.
I was very wary as my father is huge fan of his (enough to put any son off) and growing up with a regular exposure to country music put me off the genre for life.
I bought him American IV but initially he didn't like it - finding his weaker, frailer voice upsetting. Since then he's come to like it very much. In retrospect I think it reminded him he was aging too.
I then tried the recent greatest hits compilation but this was too much for me - I would certainly describe it being Country.
So my view is his last few probably appeal to a different audience to his earlier work.
