CDX with XPS2 possible?

I'm considering upgrading my CDI with a used CDX - can't afford a CDX2 at present. Is it possible to use the XPS2 with the CDX? or does it have to be a XPS. I've read lots about CDX2 with XPS2 but not much CDX with XPS2.
I listened to a CDX when it first came out and was not convinced that it had much more to offer than the CDI but perhaps the addition of an XPS2 may do the trick.
