DVD-A Recommendations

Posted by: HiDefBob on 18 July 2005

I just hooked up the multichannel outputs on my DVD5. I just played Eagles "Hotel California" and Fleetwood Mac "Rumours". The sound quality was outstanding! DVD-A (at least on these disks) blows away the sound from CD's (and the sound of CD's on the DVD5 is excellent)!

Any other suggestions? I have a couple lists of recommendations from the internet, but like to hear from those who have listened to DVD-A's on their system.

Thanks!

Just a couple of recommendations that are getting a fairly regular listen to on the DVD5 at the moment:
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead (The sound is a real surprise on this one!)

Elliot Scheiner is the man when it comes to DVD-Audio surround mixes:

My personal favorites (albeit a bit extreme examples, perhaps) are:

Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral DualDisc

Porcupine Tree's In Absentia (Richard beat me to it.)

P.S. I have had absolutely no problems with DualDiscs on the DVD5; this format may prove to be the breakout for hi-res audio.

Bach - St Matthew Passion, Nicholas Harnoncourt & co. on Teldec. Stupendous 24/96 5.1 recording, and all of nearly 3 hours of it on one disc.

Yes - Fragile.

IMO nothing can save DVD-A now. No real interest from major record labels and most of what has been released is aged MOR americana which is hardly worth getting excited about. New DVD-A releases are drops in the ocean.

Most classical labels have switched to SACD, even those that initially released a few DVD-A.

Alan nails it really.

We have a format that involves spinning silver discs. The consumer has no interest in anything that looks the same or involves extra hardware expenditure unless it conveys some hitherto undiscovered advantage.

Frankly, DVD-A, SACD etc. are ALL dead in the water. No musical product ever won a format war in the marketplace based on sound quality and that won't change.

The question IMHO is not what should you be listening to as much as why are you running into a dead end?

From that website, its by no means clear what you are getting on the Dualdisc, all it says (for some of them) is that there is a 5.1 surround sound mix...which could be anything from Dolby Digital to DTS to proper DVD-A. Since many of them appear to contain documentaries etc. then I suspect there could be no DVD-A present at all.
