There was a splendid MCA release called, "Buddy, From The Masters," which was absolutely superb. I was loaned this by a friend but he has it now again! I always look for it in HMV if I walk through!

This one has been reissued by MCA on 180grm Vinyl and is excellent. They say on the box it is remastered directly from the original analog master tapes 'without noise suppression or bass roll off'

Howard is right, it's this album. The sound is very good and in the case of "True Love Ways" absolutely awesome.

Any doubt that the limits with CD is in the mastering and production, not the format, all disappear when you hear that.

I agree; the prosaically-titled From The Original Master Tapes (MCAD-5540) is likely the best-sounding Holly on CD. It was mastered by Steve Hoffman. BTW, his website (at http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/) is a great place to find information about what CD/vinyl version of a given recording is the best-sounding.

My favourite song is "Everyday", the one with hands klapping on the knees for drums.

Or, all of them!

Thanks for the hint on "The Original Master Tapes".

Yet another vote for Buddy Holly - From the Original Master Tapes.... however there are a few versions of this around...the definitive one is a 1985 Japanese Pressing.. Catalogue Number DIDX-203 and MCAD-5540..the cover has both of these.... also D120069 is printed on the back insert. (No bar code on this one..as it must have originally had an obi strip)... mine was used and doesn't have this.

I hope that helps... track one down if you can!

Jim.....I bought it new from a dutch record shop that has audiophile LP's. You would need to search folks like Diverse Vinyl & HMV I guess. It is an MCA "Heavy Vinyl" pressing - release No.MCA 11161

Seeing this post made me dive into the collection of mono recordings to find Buddy Hollys greatest Hits on Coral from 1958.BWK 295
I am sure this record has not seen the light of day for 45 years. It was bought new by my wife. It is entirely mint and when played on the valve system this evening sounds absolutley amazing.
Not much width but amazing depth and seperation of the differant instruments. It makes you realise that hifi has not moved on much in the past 50 years.
If you were looking for one Buddy Holly record this has to be the one with 12 superb tracks.

It is Mono. The label and the back of the cover have CP8 Mono on them.

Yes it is, i have this album also in excellent condition.
Picked up at a boot sale for a quid, it still has the original price on it - 19s 11d.

as per munch's post - from the original master tapes was done by Steve Hoffman , this is the best sounding Buddy Holly release ever, and will probably never be beaten.
And unlike other DCC Cd's it's dirt cheap.

do a search on www.stevehoffman.tv

But look at this little beauty on Vinyl. Forgot I had it until today when I was organising how many Lps I have. The vinyl is also in excellent condition. Thing is I can't remember where I got it from. Can't wait to play it when I get my new deck. It's in mono btw.
