Right Wing....

I have owned many copies of Buddy's recordings over the past fifty years ...and this CD (I have the Japanese original pressing) is the best I have ever heard by quite a long way.

The period from 1958 to about 1964 was a golden age of recording both in the classical and popular fields.

I have this. I don't know how good it is compared to other Buddy reissues but I listen to it fairly frequently and have never had the urge to go and look for an alternative. I recommend it higly.

Cheers

Howard is right, it's this album. The sound is very good and in the case of "True Love Ways" absolutely awesome.

Any doubt that the limits with CD is in the mastering and production, not the format, all disappear when you hear that.

You are welcome Munch. Isn't it great when someone like Buddy Holly is presented in such decent sound?

There really was a golden age of analogue tape recording, which exactly co-incided with Buddy Holly's recordings, and this applied to classical as well.

From about 1953 to the early sixties, the analogue tape recorder [typically the EMI Ampex] reached a state of perfection which required no radical rethink for the rest of the analogue tape period.

The troubles with recording after this early flowering of the modern analogue tape recorder were assciated with splicing edited sections together, and multi-channel mixing down [the drain?] of masters, and general over-production, including alsorts of effects which became possible on the back of the tape-system. Of course the older direct cut systems [which were better than any tape ever made] did not allow for any post recording production work, and suffered from the possibility of a technical failure at any stage without the possibility of a rescue.

In my view if recording had continued to develope along the direct cut route we would all be better off! It does require great skill on the part of the musicians to create a performance, good enough not to require post production work to make it acceptable. Holly had the necessary skills, but how many of today's popular artists would manage what he did? Not many I fear ...

Hi Munch,

No CDs yet. Just a fully loaded iTouch. Looks like Pete (PWR) will be joining us on the 8th.
