Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide vs Ebay Completed Listings

Posted by: Shayman on 06 March 2006

Just a thought for a Monday afternoon here....

The Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide has been virtually the bible to me since I started collecting music in about 1990. Its rarely left my coffee table and has given me hours of entertainment over the years.

However I can't but feel that the true worth of collectors items is better served these days by checking the completed listings section on Ebay. Its kind of an up to the minute guide too.

Some records I have which the RCRRPG values at say £20 go for £2 on Ebay. Vice versa other items I have aren't in the RCRRPG despite being general releases in the UK, yet when they appear on Ebay they go for £30+.

Does anyone agree that this once essential publication is destined for the scrap heap in the near future?

I hope not - I really like Record Collector and find it a very useful source of information. Though I agree the Rare Record Price Guide has to take in to account the Internet more than it does.

It is rare for me to visit eBay, but I have noticed on Amazon some rather outlandish second hand prices for collections I know you can still get at the RRP (Shirley Collins 'Within Sound' for example).
