New Discoveries in Beethoven?

Posted by: mikeeschman on 01 August 2009

Anyone found a new performer of Beethoven that really knocks you out?

I am primarily interested in the piano sonatas and the symphonies.

For the piano sonatas I have Pollini, Barenboim, Glenn Gould, Arrau and Rudolph Serkin.

For the symphonies I have Gardiner, Jochum, Reiner, Szell and Stokowski.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

I'm spending the day listening to Listz/Beethoven transcriptions while I do other things. (Have put off the first piano lesson for Sunday morning). They are disconcerting, so I'm giving them a soaking in the background.

The hope is they will become familiar, and be accepted for what they are.

Yesterday, I kept the Liszt/Beethoven Symphony transcriptions on in the background all day. I listened to the 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th symphonies.

As George predicted, it was a learning experience. I think my ear has learned more about Beethoven's voicing and orchestration in this listening session, than in any single listening session preceding it.

So it was a day well spent.

I can recommend Beethoven Piano Sonatas played by Bernard Roberts on the Nimbus label!

Splendid and tremendous!
