The need for a turntable ???

Posted by: Naheed on 24 January 2004

I've been toying with the idea of buying a turntable, as everyone keeps telling me there so much better than cd.
Anyway - factors such as less than a dozen records (circa 10+ yrs old), lack of a remote control, and the whole tweakiness thing make me hesitant.

A final factor is I currently run a purely cd based system, would adding a turntable to the 52 affect the systems performance (i.e. rather than dedicated to cd, its shared duties) ???

Answers please Roll Eyes

Hi,

Techno, Dance?
You want a lot of bass...
Take attention with the turntables, many midrange turntables are very good in the mids and HF, but the real groove is missing.
You want to do some scratching yourself?
So the turntable has to be robust itself.
With my Garrard 401 I can handle my Punk and Techno-Stuff well, my Thorens are just not made for it. For Techno the Direct driven TTs seem better than the belt driven (Rega/Linn)
Garrards 401 are in Ebay starting with 350 Euro in England probably cheaper.
Who has a good advise which system will give a good groove? My Ortofon Jubilee is too expensive, my AudioTechnica stuff has not enough groove.
Adding a puck to fix the records will give a little bit more groove.

Have fun.

I've never heard a Garrard 3/401, but based on what I heard on my old Dual 1229 (£5, car boot sale!), idler drive bass is FAR more solid than belt drive...

One day I intend to get a 401 - they look very very industrial. Mind you, so does the RB300/Planar3 Smile Post modern and all that...
