A matter of good manners

Posted by: Massimo Bertola on 18 March 2010

I can - to some extent - accept the fact that the owners of this forum have a very strong personal thing with the makers of unofficial >upgrades< for their line of products, to the point of not wanting them advertised - not even mockingly, or indirectly - on these web pages.

But that a bunch of posts are epurated from a thread without a word of explanation, like if they didn't even exist, this I'm sorry, but I can't accept. A few of these posts were mine, but it's not that the point.

The owners know what I'm talking about. If I'm implicitly asked to wink and accept an hidiosincracy, it's one thing; if I'm rudely censored, I will simply say goodbye to all this.

If I am wrong, I apologize.

Regards
Massimo

Massimo,

It's not as if this should be a surprise to anyone. We know the rules and we shouldn't take it personally.

Your input into our community is well respected, so please don't be offended.

Considering that this is a Naim company hosted forum, I believe we are given huge leeway, we talk about turntables of all brands, arm of all brands and especially speakers of all brands.

There are places on the web to discuss unofficial upgrades and we all know where that is. Fair game ?

BTW, this thread by policy will also be deleted fairly quickly, so hope you'll feel better after a good night's sleep :-)

One does sometimes wonder if it ever occurs to posters on this forum just how offensive and patroniising they can be.

There may well have been legit reasons for pulling posts, howeve, to assume someone has not read the rules or indeed speaks, writes and reads perfect English and so has comprehended them fully is just a little presumptuous not to mention that a straw poll on here would probably reveal that most of did not read the rules and only then register or even register and then immediately read the rules.

Doubtless stuff was pulled correctly (I hope so) but could we have a little less of the attitude that one person is spoiling it for others by being a bit thick? It's hi-fi not life or death!!!

The whole point is that this forum's main aim should be to maintain an interest and a database of knowledge gained by Naim users.

If any of my posts get pulled, there's a reason and I'll accept it. Adam and Richard have got better things to do than edit and hack for fun.

The makers of that kit and cable dont want it talked about on here.
Take it up with them.
Its there in the rules. You might like to read them one day?
Stu

I remember this. A poster said (paraphrasing) "I have more flexible cable, which I can't discuss here." I then asked "Why not? Many brands of cable are discussed here."

In that case, when the question was asked "Why can't this product be discussed?", I feel the answer should have been "Because the maker does not want it discussed here." We don't really know who can be discussed and who can't from just the vague hint that was dropped.

And, Stu, normally I wouldn't say this, but I find your tone somewhat condescending. Perhaps this is not the best way to interact with people?

Sorry - but I can't see much point in this thread.

The forum rules are there for everyone to read. I don't think sticking to the rules presents any real hardship.

But, if you think you can't stick to the rules, it might be a good idea to find somewhere else to spend time.

A company has, in the past, expressed a strong desire not to be discussed on this forum and we are happy to oblige (including here). You will be informed if your post is removed for this reason.

So sorry, this was the clarifying rule and I hadn't understood it. I apologise. Moderators, with such zeal on some members' (pardon, Senior Members') part, you can actually save some time. A short notice (Massimo, please (re)read the rules, paragraph 14 refers to >stop it< and applies here) would have been welcome, but I will do with 13-21-14-3-8's good advice.

I removed the posts.

I leave moderation to Richard but may intervene if I am dropping in and notice something which would benefit from immediate action.

In this case the coy mention (not allowed to name) of "the company/cable that dare not speak its name" was followed up by another which pointed out where the name of this anonymous cable could be found.

This was then followed up by further queries, and so on and so on. Ripples in ripples.

If Senior Members deliberately push the rules I assume they know why their posts are removed and why, if they persist, they will be banned..

Even here I find another coy attempt to mention the unmentionables - which tends to indicate that you know of whom you speak and you should know the Forum Rules by now.

Engelbert,

thanks so much for the kind and encouraging support. Everyone knew me as a fierce oppositor to Naim, a rebel who catches every possible occasion to denigrate the company and refuses to follow their guiding lines, but you seem to have discovered it just now. Sorry.
As to the last, even more encouraging point of your post, I will consider it carefully. It's a beautiful, sunny day and many worthwhile things can be done outside.

A good weekend to all.

Some harsh/rude words have been said here - unnecessarily I think.

It would help, as Massimo suggests, if, when removing posts, a quick note were posted as explanation. That would be good manners and I would hope no great additional effort - it is not just the "senior members" who might need their attention drawn to this but "lower mortals" Razz such as myself who may not be aware of the rule - who haven't yet posted on a topic but may be about to, or want to understand what is going on.

To repeat all of the time that "it's in the rules" is not really all that helpful - and I think that's particularly true from the perspective of newbies or passers by, who could easily be put off forever by the lack of information / rudeness

(PS not saying Naim staff are rude, just that it would be more helpful to insert a quick note as suggested by Massimo)

I have on another forum had my posts moved to a different section cos I'd posted in the wrong place. I thought I was going a bit potty and had

Massimo,

you have mail.

As Munch has mentioned above, Naim have agreed not to allow discussion of certain companies' products on this forum.

Which companies? Unfortunately I cannot say!!

It's a bit mad really, but I think Naim have better things to do than get into protracted legal arguments.

Thread closed, I think..
