av2 cable upgrade

Posted by: GeraldUK on 17 June 2008

hi - has anyone seen much benefit running a non stock cable from the av2 front channel to a 145 ? guess a chord anthem 2 is only choice as my av2 sits 2m or so from my fraim (does hi line come in longer lengths?). Worth it ?
thanks

Hi GeraldUK
My AV2 is around 5 meters from the rest of my kit. I made up a 5m long cable like the old grey Snaic lead to the 552 for the fronts (this is fitted with 2 padding resistors) and a 5m single lead for the NAP145 Centre and a twin lead for the NAP300 Rears. These leads were made from a Shielded Audio Cable from Maplin's (XS38R).
It all works and sounds great.
Hope this is of help.

I'm sure Naim could make a longer than usual hi-line to order. Wouldn't bother with anthem, some people seem to like it, but it seems to be more a matter of personal taste than offering any solid advantage over the stock Naim leads, which are far better made than a lot of aftermarket cables anyway!

any idea where i will get the most improvent on the cable that connects the av2 to my 252 or directly on the av2 to 145 ?

I believe that there is not currently an option to use a hi-line between the AV2 and 145.

Hi Trevor

I've just moved house and my AV kit is now 5m from the rest of my stereo kit. I bought a 5m 5pin Din to 5 pin Din Chord Crimson on the recommendation of my dealer. I've just spent the last 2 hours trying to get it to work but can't get any sound out of my front speakers in AV mode. Previously when using the Naim reverse 5 pin Din interconnect all was well.

I assume that the reverse 5 pin Din is wired differently to the standard one. If so how? Is at any easy job to alter myself or just send back to my dealer so he can sort it out

Cheers

The supplied DIN5-5 AV2 cable is wired as a crossover cable as follows:

AV2 end: Record out feeds signal to front two amplification channels; playback in feeds two-channel source signal from preamp for surround processing

Preamp end: Playback in receives L R front channels from AV2 record out; record out feeds two channel sources to AV2 playback in

Hi Richard,
Exactly as David said the cores are crossed in the original AV2 lead. If they have wired the plugs up straight it will not work. (I think I did that when I first made up my lead)
If you have got any form of test kit you can check the cores for continuity and find which pins they go to with reference to the original AV2 lead.
If you told your dealer what you wanted the lead for he should have known the wiring configuration so I would take it back to them to change as they will need to move and resolder all 4 cores in one of the plugs and this is fiddly as they will have been previously soldered as opposed to going into a new plug.
If the wiring is wrong and you are handy with a soldering iron desolder all the connections in one plug and with a very small drill, drill out all the excess solder inside the pins (if you try to remove all the solder with a soldering iron you will melt the plastic base.) then refit and solder the wires in their new configeration and all should be well.
If when you get the lead working you end up with a sound like a de-tuned AM radio station very quiet in the background you will need to fit the padding resistors in the din plug at the AV2 end as I had to.

Cheers chaps

I'm not handy with a soldering iron, so back it goes to the dealer (I did tell him exactly what I wanted it for)
