FAO: Alex S, re: Record Cleaning Fluids

Hi Alex,
On another topic you mention creating your own record cleaning fluid - which is a thing I'm keen to look into, as paying fifteen quid for a tiny vial of anonymous fluid is more than probably a mug's game (who knows what it could be)?
Therefore, have you devised your own solution and would you be prepared to spare us all a few pounds by letting us know what it is? I'm using a VPI 16.5 and want something which really lifts that crud outa them grooves...
Thanks,
TC '..'

British Audio Products sell their RCM cleaning fluid for the Moth LP cleaner at £15/ltr or £35 for 5ltrs. Which isn't bad.
If you talk to them nicely they'll probably give you the formula anyway - its basically iso-propyl alcahol in distilled H2O with a small quantiy of wetting agent or surfactant added.
I think the main problem is getting hold of supplies of IPA which Auntie in Brussels says is too dangerous for us ordinary plebs to handle.

You must wash a lot of records TC. That overpriced VPI concentrate is meant to mix with about 5 litres of iso-propyl + water isn't it? I'm still using my first gallon after a few years.

I don't think you will have any problem getting your friendly local pharmacist to sell you the alcohol or the water if you can manage to look even half responsible. The last pharmacist I asked said straight away "Is it for cleaning records?" Ordinary photographic wetting agent is fine if you don't want to risk a few drops of Fairy liquid.

You must have a very friendly pharmisist I must have looked in on around fifteen now and every one has said they can't sell it.

It's not that I clean a lot of records, it's that I recently had to put all my stuff into storage (I am moving home) and the big tubs of RCF had to be ditched, sadly.
However, I'm not keen to spend another £15 on the VPI concentrate - mainly because I never found it to be as good as the original, made-up, bottle.

There are only 2 worth using:
Buggtussel - Vinylzyme Gold,www.buggtussel.com and
www.redtrumpet.com. - needs a record cleaning machine for best results; very easy to use, better than any alcohol based fluid I've ever used.
Disc Doctor -
www.discdoc.com. No machnies needed. Difficult to use, PITA, but bets results if used correctly.
Regards.

Do you have a web address or contact details? I'm interested in trying something different to the VPI concentrate, and I've nearly run out...
Tony.
