Building a NAIT-2 based system...

Posted by: Top Cat on 11 April 2001

Hi folks.

Later this week, my Nait-2 should arrive - I bought it primarily for use as a second system, and was encouraged by a great many positive posts and a great price.

At the same time, due to the nefarious activities of a pair of monster rabbits (seriously), Tahra's own (el-cheapo) integrated amplifier appears to have died (probably an internal fuse, but I haven't checked).

Therefore, I plan to loan her the Nait-2 until her amp is fixed (could be a while if it's something more serious than an internal fuse).

She has a Technics CD player, a Sony record player and a pair of Mission speakers, joined with Cable-Talk 3.1 single wire (I think; it's a multistrand, anyway).

Can anyone help with the following questions:

I'm keen to get the Nait-2 into use as soon as I get it, but the unusual connections may make that initially difficult...

...the ultimate destination for the Nait-2 is as part of a vinyl-only system (although I may add a tuner), and I'm therefore looking for something like an old P3 or a Linn Basik or even an early LP12 (if it's going cheaply). ANyone?

any half decent electrical stotre like a Radio Shack should have an adaptor for phono to din, in fact I've got one lying around at home that I'll send to you if you send me your snail address.

I'm using my NACA5 'nude' across the biwire (bass+treble) posts on my speakers, do the missions have 5 way posts ?

Otherwise, if you have a tame dealer maybe he'll do a bit of plug swapping for you.

Where can I get suitable adapters to allow the phono leads of both the (MM) turntable and the CD player to connect to the Nait
What termination is suitable to connect the speaker cable (currently unterminated) - something preferably non-soldered as this is a temporary measure until she gets her own amp sorted.
If the current wire is unsuitable, can anyone send me their unwanted NACA5 or sell some to me cheaply?

1.Phono MM
The Nait has phono's for MM input so no problem there.

2.DIN-Phono
Maplin used to sell these, but I can't find them in the old catalogue I have. Local electrical Jap-fi shop may help?

3. Cable Talk 3.1 is of similar dimensions (if memory serves me correctly) to the NAIM NAC cables, I would think it will be fine for use with a Nait, as it's likely to have similar electrical properties. I use some similarly dimensioned cable from Richer Sounds with my Nait, it works fine, but the amp isn't used at high levels.

To terminate it obtain some screw terminating 4mm plugs (I think Richer sell these as well), they'll suffice for a temporary fit.

Word of caution - ensure the 4mm connector body (if uninsulated) cannot contact the Nait chassis, as this is will short speaker outputs to mains earth, which is unlikely to be healthy for the Nait o/p stage!

John,

if it's a very temporary solution you're after, you may find that you can buy an el-cheapo phono-to-DIN cable for about the same money as an adapter.

If she's already using el-cheapo cable this won't result in a performance degradation, either.

cheers, Martin

...it arrived yesterday, and I'm excited about getting all the leads and so forth sorted out so that I can give it a quick blast soon. I take it that, having the 'unfinished' case edging, it's an 'old-style' Nait 2?

Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much recapping costs (it may need this; I don't know if it's been done since new or not, so I may have to post the serial no.)

Anyway, later on this year I am planning to do up and sell my home; between doing it up (in say, three months' time) and selling it (four?), I'll be packing the main system up and either putting it in storage or loaning it to someone, so it's pretty handy that the Nait is so compact that I won't be entirely without music!

Fine little amp! In the context of a cheapo system (Sony turntable and Mission speakers) with bell-wire interconnects and little-or-no warm-up time, it sounded like a capable contender - as I don't yet have an adaptor for the phono->Din connections, I couldn't audition against a CD player, but in a nutshell I was impressed with:

(a) dynamic - seemed quite a punchy little amp
(b) timing - the basic elements are there
(c) internal balance - i.e. of music versus individual parts; very listenable and foot-tappable.

Drawback (possibly due to other cheapo components in the chain, plus dubious cartridge):

* no low bass or high treble as such

All in all, I'm pretty happy for the money - can't wait to hear it with the CD player once it has warmed up!
