Posted on: 25 January 2007 by Chillkram
What, better than this lot?

Actually, we've found some!

Titter ye not! That England Women's Squad includes some legendary surnames, Andrew, Cooke, Leonard.

If you go to the 6 Nations England Italy game on 10th Feb (ticket still available from Ticketmaster), it's the boys' match at 13.30 and the girls' match at 16.00 - makes the £65 plus £6 booking fee good value...

I rememember at school, once or twice, we had to play the girls at hockey and they played us at (touch) rugby (I went to school in Twickenham and Rugby was the preferred sport around there). Our teacher told us to take it easy with the girls but they tore us to shreds in the hockey and beat us up with those bloody sticks then in the Rugby they were able to get away with blue murder, chucking the ball around like a netball and taking the piss out of the fatties in our front row. I wonder if it's still the same in ladies rugby?

I don't think they're allowed the sticks, Jamie.

I have to say (Mrs JWM having gone to bed) that this made me ver nostalgic - reminds me of Sheffield University c1983/4, Women's Rugby, one of whom still has a treasured rugby jersey of mine...

Is Wilko about to make a full return to England finally?

It'll be good to see a player of his class vying for an international place again. However, we must be circumspect and (a) whilst it's alright to have heroes, not to saddle him as an individual player with all our hopes (which I feel has been a problem in the past - 'we're alright now, we've got X...'), and (b) to be realistic about as he has been away for quite a while.

PS Mark - on your linked article, note the use of the word 'thumped' of the Leicester performance... Smile

I agree. Union could do with a bit more of the League professionalism and conditioning. Some of that has come over since Union went pro and a few League boys and coaches have come over, but they are still a way behind I think.

It strange, union has come on leaps and bounds -I suppose it can be put down to the emphasis on scrumages in union and holding possesion.

Any union team with small forwards will always suffer to keep the ball.

If anything, both codes exploit the modern differences in "fitness". League, considered more athletic endurance, union having more power play in scrums etc.

Its amazing though, how you can tell at pro level which code someone plays, just by how they look, I can tell anyway.

Anyone going to the Calcutta Cup? Meet for a beer?

C'mon guys, final 6 nations positions...

Ireland
France
Wales
England
Scotland
Italy

Although of course France could just as easily come 1st or 5th! It looks really open this year, Ireland are a settled unit who have added a better pack to more established talents outside, Wales capable of a really hot game at any point, England surely have bottomed out (please) and the Scots are quite capable of upsets, especially at home. I think that if France start well against Italy then they have the ability and power to really click, although both Ireland and England away does not suit them and Ireland have their tougher matches at home.

Should be a good one-I reckon a World Cup on the horizon should inspire some good stuff.

Could be right Bruce, I wouldn't bet against Ireland. I think you might be a little pessimistic about England's chances, though. The 'Raging Bull' will put some much needed passion and fight back into the team and I think some clarity of thought and direction from Brian Ashton will make all the difference.
He is a fan of League and if some of their fitness, fierce tackling and running lines could be brought into the side it could be exciting.

As you rightly say, though it is as open as it has been in a while.

Placing England above Scotland was being optimistic.

Not really Pete, we know the ABs are the best in the world and I still remember the impact that the Super 12s had when I first saw it on Sky over here.

Watching Graham Henry's Auckland Blues I was just awestruck by the speed and skill of the rugby I was watching.

However, the Six Nations is still my favourite rugby competition to watch, especially when the wind and rain are driving hard at Lansdowne Rd, and visiting teams have to dig deep just to stay on terms with an Irish team that is the best for generations.

Then there are the unpredictable french who can beat anyone on their day, but can equally just go missing; the unknown quantity that is England; a resurgent Wales with brilliant running lines and a much improved scottish team. And the Italians, no longer the whipping boys in Europe.

Yup! I can't wait!
