Cartridge for a Rega P9?
Posted by: Jaybar on 30 August 2003
It seems that folks have experience with the Rega P9. I am asking, even though I have non-naim components.
Sold my Linn TT and will be purchasing a P9. What low Output MC Cartridges have you used with this table/arm that do not require spacers, if possible. I will also need a phono stage and am open to options. I would prefer a phono stage that allows loading, but that is not an absolute requirement.
I am thinking of Dynavector, but am open to other ideas. I would like to stay under a $1000 if possible. I am thinking of the Dynavector 17Dmk II, but I am concerned about what I have heard to be a small stylus and its fragility, as I have declining vision. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jay

Second for the Dynavector DV-17DII the output is very low.... Dynavector Aust has just started selling their new phono stage P-75, the gain is 60db or 63db the extra 3db takes care of the 17DII's low output. I own a linto and the P-75 is quieter. I would vote for the following combo P9/17DII/P-75

I am worried about the tiny Stylus on the 17DII. I have poor( and declining vision) and wonder if I can see it to clean it?
If that is an issue, alternative cartridges?

Seriously consider changing the counterweight on your P9 if you are using a nonRega cartridge. The difference is significant. I used a DV XX2 on my P9 with great results.

Jaybar -
I recently bought a new version of the 17D2 which has a noticeably higher output. My dealer (and I did think he was winding me up at first) called it the '17D2 Mk2 and a half'.
I'm using it with K boards in a 52 and it sounds great. Plus I'm only having to up the volume a small amount compared to line level inputs.
Yes the cantilever is very short - but that's one of the reasons why the 17D2 is so neutral and fast. I wouldn't worry too much about cleaning it. Your ears will tell you when you need to blow the dust off.
IIRC, some of the 'old-time' P9 users like Joe Petrik and (bless his name) Vuk used Lyras. Tony Lornogan, another of the early P9 converts, had good results with a much cheaper Ortofon MC10.
Hope this helps.
PS Anyone know if the Dyna P75 is available in the UK yet?

My usual CD level is pretty much 9 o'clock on the dial. With my first 17D2 I had to jack it up to around noon or more. With this new one it's at around 10 o'clock and yes, the noise floor is very low.
Never had any RF problems. The difference really is marked, but the packaging, model number, etc, is exactly the same. Not sure why Dyna aren't marketing this as a 17D2 mk3.
Jaybar - I can't seen any reason why any of these carts can't be used with a Stageline.
Can anyone please answer my question about the Dynavector P75? Pleeeeease?

I've also tried the XX2 on the new P9 with great results. Contrary to received wisdom, you don't seem to need spacers or height adjustment - seems to fir very well.
