Looking for J***.. Suggestions needed

Posted by: Flame on 27 December 2007

Hi guys and happy new year. I have recently discovered the beautiful Diana Krall and I'm really enjoying the darker and mellower songs she has (case of you, how deep is the ocean, etc.). I'm hoping to further expand my Jazz exposure and was wondering who do you recommend that has beautiful mellow songs like that? Regards...

Try Ella Fitzgerald's series of 'songbooks', Cassandra Wilson's Blue Light 'Till Dawn and don't forget Rickie Lee Jones's album of standards 'Pop Pop' from about 15 years ago.

Any of Diana Reeves albums on Blue Note will do the trick for what you're after. Add to that the OST from Good Night & Good Luck (the George Clooney film about McCarthyism in the Fifties)

Also, Andra Sparks has that beautiful mellow vocal that Krall uses so weel. For older stuff, vintage Sarah Vaughan is available on some very good Verve VME ( Master Edition) discs.
I'd always suggest Stacey Kent to people too, although her voice is pitched differently but equally as honeyed. Her interpretation of everything from Paul Simon to Jobim is delectable. The sound on her Candid albums is very good. I hope the new Blue Note isn't engineered the same way as Norah Jones' debut or countless other recent Blue Notes.

If you dig Krall singing A Case of You, check out Joni Mitchell's reworking of her own song on the album Both Sides, Now, a beautiful and dark album of jazz standards plus two by Joni: the aforementioned Case and the title track. Luminous, sensuous arrangements by the brilliant Vince Mendoza and Joni's latter day voice: low, smoky, and dark.

All best,
Fred

Patricia Barber's "Modern Cool" album is full of dark, slow bluesy jazz songs. That's what comes to mind from your description.

I don't agree on that:

Look into:

Nina Simone - At Town Hall
Eva Cassidy - Songbird
