Naim DAC firmware?

Posted by: Hot Rats on 20 October 2010

Has there yet been a firmware update for the Naim DAC? I wondered if they had managed to come up with anything to make performance with USB memory sticks any more consistent

There will be a user software update to allow FLAC in the near future.

There is a release 65 firmware update that is supposed to address these issues.
Naim should be able to supply your dealer with it.

I think Naim should inform dealers what and when updates are available.
This seems to be a weakness in their communications.

I received the Release 65 firmware update from Steven Hopkins this morning. It has installed without any problems.

I will test it out to find out whether it resolves any of the problems with USB sticks not being recognised by the DAC.

These are the release notes provided with the required files:

Added support for iPad.

Changed the way authentication works to better support old and new iPods/iPhones/iPad.

Added support for more Apple Remotes

Fixed a bug when a playlist finish on a memory stick and meta data is last in the wavfile the DAC played the metadata infinately long.

Added support to dim the buttons with a Preamp DISP press and hold. Also added discrete codes for on / off.

Changed the discrete codes away from or sub remote subset.

Improved the USB stack to cope with more memory sticks.

Fixed a bug with the rear RC5 input caused by a HW issue.

I have tested the firmware update with some 24-Bit/96kHz wave files. I put these files in the root directory of the USB stick and used the USB socket on the front of the DAC.

One of my USB sticks previously worked only on an intermittent basis with the DAC and I had never managed to get my other USB stick to work at all. Both USB sticks worked with the 24-Bit/96kHz files following the installation of the Release 65 Firmware.

If you want to try this for yourself, I have uploaded the update to Rapidshare and Hotfile. (I hope it's OK to do this. Mods please delete and accept my apology if it is not acceptable)

I have uploaded in RAR and zip file formats. Each compressed file (You only need to download one of them) contains the release notes from Naim Audio, the two files required to perform the firmware update (These are in a compressed file format) and a text file containing the installation instructions that were included in Steven Hopkins' email containing the required update files. Please follow these instructions carefully.

I would expect Naim to post something about the new firmware and a link for the download!

Thanks for the links and the information. All updated with no problems.

What? They have enabled the lights to be dimmed. Great. I and other have been lobbying for this sometime back.

I will try the new firmware on my DAC.

Thanks,

By "dimmed" it means "off". Pressing a button on the DAC and it lights up for a couple of seconds and then goes off.

Yes, that is how I understood it. It works exactly like that on the preamps.

Soooo, does it sound better or worse Winker

Seriously though: Thanks for posting and thanks to Naim for hopefully having ironed out some quirks. And the dimming is very nice.

I suspect there's a slight misprint but I imagine there might be a danger of IR code clash with the codes for the n-Sub, so the nDac's codes have been changed accordingly.

If this is an official update to the Ndac is it being released officially via Naim on their website? It should be I suggest.

A few changes, I see, such as iPad support. However, I for one have never used my iPhone or iPod with the DAC (and now my iPad) and probably never will. I also don't mind the DAC lights - actually, I find them sort of reassuring. I'll get excited if there's a upgrade that, if possible, improves the already great sound.

I also used to have a problem with the nDAC hanging. It was fixed with either a system reset and/or firmware upgrade. (I did both)
Posted on: 26 October 2010 by Aleg
The upgrade is great.

No longer the hair raising sound when coming to the final WAV-file with tags (that one has forgotten to remove).

The feature to dim the button lights is nice to. I like all boxes dark when listening late at night.

The upgrade procedure was easy to do as well, so this may be the default future way of distributing upgrades, as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you Naim.

I wondered that as well. Since I like all lights to be off except the logo when the system is not being used. I achive this by pressing the first button from left (Undock) and this will switch off the sync light. I press button 1 (connected to digital source) when listerning to music.

btw, I did my upgrade as well last night and all works well. Did not do critical listerning test before and after so cannot comment on any improvement.

My next quest is to find a suitable cover for the front USB port. Aesthetically it does not go with all the other equipmemnt and it does not look nice. I neat cover would look nice and make the port almost invisible. It will also stop the dust getting in the port.

Open to any ideas or any product (cover) suggestions.

I'm still puzzled why NAIM didn't inform DAC users, either through the Web site or retailers, that this update was available.
I only became aware of it when making an enquiry about a possible FLAC update to Steve Hopkins.
Come on NAIM why not be a bit more forthcoming about these updates!
